Famed Argentinean folk singer remembered. On Saturday, July 9 beloved Argentinean folk
singer and novelist Facundo Cabral passed away at the age of 74 in Guatemala. While
traveling with his concert promoter after a performance, their car was attacked and
Mr. Cabral sadly lost his life to gunshot wounds. Over his several-decade career, Mr.
Cabral rose to fame as a peaceful protest singer, risking his own safety to give a voice
to issues of democracy and sovereignty through music. He became internationally known for
“I'm Not from Here or There,” a song that has since been recorded by many artists in
different languages. Among his many honors, Mr. Cabral was named a United Nations Messenger
of Peace in 1996. When asked during an interview what his final message would be, Mr. Cabral
said, "... Life is a precious gift... We are born to live, and we can only live in love."
Among those expressing their sadness at his loss were the presidents of Colombia, Ecuador
and Venezuela, and three days of national mourning have been declared in Guatemala.
Our respectful condolences to the loved ones and many admirers of Mr. Facundo Cabral, whose
noble spirit will ever shine through his loving legacy to the world. May his soul rest serenely
in the love and grace of the Divine
