One of the most common or most popular questions that I get all the time is whether or not
moms have to pump and dump their breast milk after they've had an alcoholic drink. In a
nutshell the answer is no, not necessarily. If you want a glass of wine two times a week
that's absolutely fine, I would recommend feeding the baby 1st and then having the drink.
If you go a little while then your at a wedding or friends party and you're really feeling
it, then I would recommend probably pumping and dumping the next one or two feedings.
In general the amount of alcohol in the standard glass of wine and beer it's okay, in fact
having a dark beer can help with milk supply as well. So if you want to have a Guinness
that's okay. Again, a glass of wine, a small glass of wine is fine it would help relax
you. If there's alcoholism in your family or any kind of liver disease you might want
to be a little bit more careful about your alcohol intake as far as going through the
baby. There are products out there if you are very, very nervous about how much is going
through there are products like milk screen which is a little strip that you squeeze some
breast milk onto and it will tell you the levels of alcohol in your system. And so that's
always an option as well, but if you want to have a drink have a drink and enjoy it.
