Oreo and Belly had been told since they were young puppies that they could not get along.
Everyone said that because they are different breeds they cannot be friends. So they never
played together because that is what they had always been told.
Then one fateful day a boy named Danny and a girl named Kaitlyn went to the pet store.
First they played with Belly and thought she was cute as could be. Then they put Belly
back in her crate and asked to play with Oreo who was the most well behaved dog they had
ever seen. They loved both of the puppies immediately and they could not pick just one.
Then they decided to put the two dogs together and see what would happen...
At first Belly and Oreo stayed far away from each other. They knew that they shouldn't
be playing together; after all they have nothing in common. Belly laughed at Oreo's funny ears
that stood straight up while Oreo made fun of Belly's extra long nose; all that they
could see were the differences between them. Then Danny threw a squeaky toy and it changed
the way that they thought forever. As soon as they saw the toy flying through the air
they both ran to catch it. They got to the toy at the same time and then ran in circles
for a couple of minutes passing the toy back and forth and wrestling around with each other.
After a couple of rounds of throwing the toy and running around together Belly and Oreo
began to see that maybe playing with puppies of another breed wasn't so bad after all.
They thought about it and they both wanted to play with the same toys, to get their bellies
rubbed, and to share the humans' attention. Oreo and Belly started to see that they had
more things in common than they thought. After Danny and Kaitlyn adopted the two puppies
they became the best of friends. From then on Oreo and Belly stopped judging other animals
based on their breed and they ended up making lots of new friends, even with animals that
weren't dogs! They realized that the color of your fur is not what matters, as long as
you are having fun and enjoying the time that you spend with others that is what really
counts.
