jbjb{x{x A student who comes to NC State is likely to study the varieties of North Carolina
ranging from Outer Banks speech to Mountain Speech to Hispanicized English to Lumbee English
or even Cherokee English. So there is a great resource I mean we have done in the last couple
of decades more than 2,500 interviews with the residents of this state. One of our really
exciting projects is the longitudinal study of African American English. We followed 70
African American kids, we interviewed them, we have all their school data, all their social
data, so we ve been examining how their speech changes over the years from preschool through
the termination of their high school. So we can look at mother s speech we look at peer
speech we look at style shifting. So there s this great potential for research data all
of which is on our incredible website called the Sociolinguistic Archive and Analysis Project.
Our English Department has 5 Sociolinguists. Most Linguistic Departments around the country
are lucky to have one or two. We have folks who work on Bilingualism and Language Contact,
on Discourse, on Sociophonetics, on Language Variation, and also on Applications and Engagement.
I personally think that one of the unique aspects of our program is its community dimension.
We have a linguistics lab where students work together. If you look at our publication record
you ll notice that we do a lot of co-authoring with students, but students also have the
opportunity to get engaged. With things that range from teaching 8th graders about language
diversity, working at the state fair in a booth that advertises and talks to the public
about language difference. By constructing exhibits in museums, by working with our documentaries
to document the language variation of North Carolina. So we actually are pretty flexible
in terms of students interests and strands of both research and engagement. ecca* ecca)
