Hi! Welcome to the Gearheads!
Today we´ll tighten the fan-belt of my MX-5.
To do this, we need the follwoing:
Waterpump pliers, A ratchet with 10mm nut,
Needle nose pliers, Some WD-40 multi-oil,
And a screwdriver.
First we loosen all clamps of the air hose in the front.
We have to loosen especially this one, to split the whole thing in two parts.
And this one here may be stuck, so this is where we´ll use our WD-40.
We have already loosened the clamps here...
Right here, there´s still a little mount, fixed with a 10mm nut.
This one has got to go.
Here we go....this is the screw of our mount.
Now we just need to get rid of the last small hose clamps.
Ah...nearly forgot this one.
Now everything comes off.
Now that our intake tract is gone, we have free sight on our fan-belt.
To tighten the belt, we first need to loosen that 17mm screw.
Two or three revolutions are enough to loosen the alternator.
On top of the alternator we can see that "pin", which has to be loosened on the backside.
To loosen it, you will need a 12mm nut on your ratchet.
Tim will do this now, but we just can´t show you the backside properly.
On the left side of the alternator, we can see another 12mm screw. This one is actually used to adjust the position of the alternator.
Then the alternator can be moved to tighten the belt.
So when we have loosened the other two screws,
we can adjust everything with this one.
[...]
Here we can show you the mechanism which is used to adjust the alternator.
This block is right behind the alternator.
And this is the "pin" we already mentioned.
Now we can see, that it is actually a 12mm screw.
So if you loosen this one, you can adjust the alternator by using the other 12mm screw.
Because this one moves this little block, and with it the alternator.
If we loosen this screw, we push the alternator to the engine block.
If we tighten that screw, we pull it out to the side, which tightens the belt.
When everything is loose now, we can see,
that we actually can move the alternator by hand.
That´s what we wanted...
To tighten our belt now, we have to tighten this screw.
And as we can see, the alternator moves to the left, bit by bit.
You should check the tolerance of the belt, because it shouldn´t be too tight.
Perfect tension, so now we can put things back together.
First we tighten the upper screw in the back (20-25NM).
Then we can tighten the lower 17mm screw (40-50NM).
You will need to counter this one with a 17mm wrench in the back.
That´s basically it. So...see you soon!
