The government are in breach of their own legal process,
says Te Whanau a Apanui.
They're pursuing a judicial review in the High Court
to question the government's actions to unilaterally grant the permit
to Petrobras without iwi consultation and collaboration.
However, iwi efforts are not bringing the Crown to the table.
Te Whanau a Apanui are in battle-mode.
If they're successful, it then begs the question
whether other permits were given under the same rule.
It's a fight that Taranaki iwi have long been withstanding,
but to no avail.
Many other iwi are starting to experience petroleum activity
and are exploring their avenues.
Currently, there's an effort to look
at environmental and economic development issues
that could be derived from natural resources.
Meanwhile, Te Whanau a Apanui will set greater benchmarks for the Crown
after next week's review in the High Court.
