This new dual degree program will allow students from the Dominican Republic who are interested
in a career in Civil Engineer or Construction to complete two degrees in the same time it
takes to complete one. The total duration is four years. Students enrolled in this program
will start the first three years at UNIBE and then transfer to Florida International
University in Miami for the fourth and last year of their studies.
The residency, one year residency requirement for the students in this program will actually
allow the to have access to the faculty of Florida International University, it will
allow the access to State of the Art, wind engineering lab, intelligent transportation
labs and structures labs. It will also allow them first hand access to some of the largest
civil engineering projects in the United States, such as the Miami Port Tunnel, as well as
the Dolphin Express Way Exchange, which is a 4D segmental bridge project. Is very important
for them to be there, in addition socially, this will help them also experience life in
the US and in Miami. And also completing the degree in Miami will allow them to get a two-year
work permit in the US, that will allow them to hone in their skills and expertise that
are acquire
in this degree.
The benefit for the students of obtaining two degrees, the first degree is obviously
the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) from UNIBE, a highly recognized local
university in the DR, to actually be able to practice engineering locally. And then
the second degree, which is a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Florida
International University (FIU), an ABET accredited university in the US will allow them to sit
for the fundamentals of Civil Engineering exam, also known as the 'FE exam' and eventually,
to sit for the 'PE exam'. Having a US based engineering license will open the door for
careers in various areas, and with large international engineering corporations in many areas of
the world such as the middle east and asia, which actually require students to have a
US based professional license.
Program will commence in september and students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible
to the program. The transition between the two universities will be a very smooth one.
We have been working diligently with faculty and staff here from UNIBE to assure that students
participating in the program will have a flawless transition between the two and will not have
to repeat any courses. Students need to contact the department of civil engineering at UNIBE.
We have work with them to develop multiple material brochures and pamphlets, and we are
working on a website from FIU to actually guide students through the process.
I think the University, from what we heard from our colleagues in the college of business,
is that the students here are of very high caliber, and that is why we are interested
in recruiting those students to go to FIU. We are also very impressed with the professionalism
of the faculty and the staff that are here, and we are looking forward to continue working
with them and collaborate in various levels.
I highly encourage all students who are interested in making a difference in their carreer and
in lives to join this program and I am positive that this program and particularly the one
residency at FIU will make a big difference in their career opportunities, and we look
forward to have the first school board join us in FIU.
