>> Liliana Rossman: Well, a good writer is important.
Being a good writer is important,
is vital for making a difference in terms of one's career
and development or one's voluntary opportunities.
And so I think that writing is one of the most effective
and efficient ways of demonstrating one's knowledge.
And so the campus is cultivating this reputation of being one
that graduates good writers.
So we believe when employers around the county,
around the region see a résumé from a Cal State grad,
they will -- Cal State San Marcos grad,
that they will immediately assume
that that person is a good writer.
The more you do it, the better you get at it.
And with the proliferation of the Internet and blogs
and so forth, there's a lot of writing.
And unfortunately, there's also a lot of bad writing.
And this is a time when I think we need
to help our students understand what good writing means
and how -- what a difference it makes for them,
for their audience, and for their purposes.
I think it helps people demonstrate what they know.
First of all, they have to explain it to themselves.
And then they have to explain it to an audience.
And that audience, of course, is often the professor.
But it's a mythical audience, if you will.
It's not really just the professor
that they're writing for.
They have to be -- they have to understand that they're writing
for a larger audience, for -- that this is training,
that this is a drill for getting themselves ready to write
for a larger audience.
And understand what that audience requires,
what that audience needs in order to get engaged
in the reading process.
So it's a give and take.
