I´m here in Amsterdam joining the HP conference
which is a learning experience for me
which is necessary in the changing markets we are in now
- new retail channels, the introduction of eBook,
social media,
shorter life cycles for books.
So the publishing industry is undeniably going through huge change
and the publisher needs to look at how they can be flexible
to meet the changing demands of today´s industry.
I was invited to be a guest speaker today
to address the special issues of how digital printing function
in relation to the publishing industry;
from a management perspective of running a publishing house
and being able to improve the profitability,
cash flow and productivity.
The uncertainty of the market really has an effect on our production of the books.
We need to look again at the printed copies that are produced.
It is very difficult to estimate how many copies will be printed.
Therefore, the use of digital printing allows you to print a small quantity,
get the market reception
and then decide, well, I ll only print 1,000 more copies
or I will print 20,000 more copies.
Namely, by being able to have a small quantity
of initial printing distributed in the market,
getting a response is a form of market research.
I think it s clear that the message today is that
digital print has a role to play in the publishing industry today.
Listening to our speakers, what´s been very clear in the message
is that publishing companies are moving away from focusing
on a cost per unit in terms of production
and really looking at profitability per unit.
The presentation was mainly about managing digital content
in order to make it available for print on-demand purposes.
So, a lot of publishers have content available.
That content needs to be prepared before you start producing documents
in a print on-demand environment.
You can optimize your supply chain in terms of what you need to produce,
how many copies you need
and where you can use print on-demand compared to offset.
So, those concepts now seem to evolve into the publishing area.
