Hi, Lela Bryan here. I am going to talk to you about the best way to quit smoking.
So, why don't I recommend cold turkey? I have a lot of reasons. The first one is that
awareness is the first step to change so you need to
be aware of what you're doing before you can change it.
So that is part of the solution I use in Nicotine Solutions are awareness techniques and those
take some time. The second reason is that it takes time. It
takes 21 days to make or break the habit so you need that time to change, for your body
to adjust. There was a book written by a surgeon years and years ago and he would talk about
how if he would have people that were shot in the war and they had to have arms, legs
or whatever amputated he said they would have the phantom limb even though they didn't
have the arm but what they would do is think they still had the arm for 21 days. It took
21 days for the body and mind to adjust to the new behavior, to the new change.
Another reason that cold turkey is not the best way to quit smoking is that your heart
rate as a smoker beats 10,000 times more because nicotine constricts the blood vessels and
makes the heart beat harder and faster to get the blood thru.
So when you quit smoking and let's say you quit smoking cold turkey abruptly, what happens
is the body goes into shock. Sometimes people never recover from that shock of going cold
turkey. The body can gain weight, you get heart burn, headaches and you get all of these
symptoms of quitting all at once and it becomes a horrible shock to the body. Now if you can
adjust that you're smoking and detoxifying over a period of 6 weeks, that's what I
do in Nicotine Solutions then what you can do is help the body adjust to the change in
your metabolism. (by the way if you hear a train going by I live on a house boat so its
inevitable that I am going to have a train or seagull going by going "ert, ert ert'
or stuff like that.) So what you need to do is to allow your body
at least 21 days to change and adjust and I have a program for quit smoking that is
8 weeks and you smoke for the first 6 weeks in Nicotine Solutions so I have you go 42
days of changing just to make sure it's a permanent change.
So, cold turkey is difficult on the body, it doesn't allow the body enough time to
adjust to change. Psychologically you need at least 21 days to change. We change but
our bodies don't and our minds don't really like change all that much. So if you can do
little tiny step by step changes and build on what went on before then what you can do
is have a more permanent change. That is the reason why I don't think cold turkey is
the best way to quit smoking. So if you want more tips I have made about
