Fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing is a technique that is used to address skin crepiness, skin
wrinkling, and what we call skin dyschromias, or color variations. The color variations
can come up for a variety of reasons. Some people naturally have color variations and
have had them their whole life. Other people have sun damage. Its very common and one
of the most often things that we see in the office is people who have sun damage on one
side of their face from while they are driving. This can lead to brown spots or darkened spots
along the face, along the brow, and along the neck. To know if youre a good candidate
for CO2 resurfacing, I encourage you to come into the office. One of the things I can tell
you is it really does a great job of correcting some of the crepiness along the neck, along
the jawline and cheek, as well as around the eyes. Its a great treatment for people
who feel like they have a little bit of sagging here or a little bit crepiness here who arent
ready for surgery.
The CO2 resurfacing actually tightens the skin and causes collagen stimulation, and
that over the period of about six months really can improve the character and the quality
of the skin. One of the benefits of the CO@ is not only does it fix the crepiness and
the small wrinkles in the skin, it also fixes dyschromias or color variations. What happens
is as the CO2 resurfaces the outer layer of the skin, there are some areas that have different
pigmentation than your normal skin actually slough off. The beauty of the fractionated
CO2 is once upon a time when we used full CO2 laser ablation, there was three and sometimes
even four weeks of downtime. With the fractionated CO2, theres generally only about a week
to ten days of downtime. The other benefit is with the old technique there was a lot
of crusting and a lot of postoperative care. The way we do the fractionated CO2 now, theres
roughly about a week of just keeping your face moist and it heals up beautifully. So
if we did your procedure on a Monday, generally by that weekend, Friday or Saturday, you could
go out to dinner and start to get back to normal life and truly nobody would know that
you had anything done.
