Ngati Ruapani is taking their concerns of assimilation
to the Maori Affairs Select Committee
who sat in Whakatane today to hear submissions on the Tuhoe settlement.
Ngati Ruapani warns that the Tuhoe settlement
has the potential to make their iwi invisible in its own tribal region.
Hinerangi Goodman was there today.
Those both for and against the Tuhoe settlement remain divided.
If Tuhoe's claims in Waikare Moana are passed,
Ngati Ruapani will lose out.
Our ancestors' aspirations will not be met.
One thing is for sure - they must move as one.
We don't want to change what's in the bill.
We believe this is the realisation of the our hopes for Tuhoe.
The claim was laid
before the Urewera-Tuhoe claim was settled in July.
The important thing is that both sides have had their say.
This is the realisation of our dreams.
I commend Tuhoe for seeking what's best for them,
although Tamati and his people know this isn't the end of the fight.
The Select Committee's report
is expected to be released in coming months.
Hinerangi Goodman, Te Karere.
