[FAR OUT]
[made possible by THE NORTH FACE NEVER STOP EXPLORING]
Despite removing himself from society, Faustino's lifestyle began to change
when civilization started catching up with him.
Just two years ago, the government found out he had guns on his property
and they cut a deal with him in which he would exchange them for solar panels,
which he doesn't really use.
That was only the first in a series of changes that would lead him to modify his lifestyle.
They installed this panel like two years ago.
So the police came here?
Yes, they came for my guns.
They took them away.
They never gave them back to me but they didn't press charges against me either.
I got more. And I won't hand them in.
I used to spend months without talking to anyone,
even a year without seeing anyone.
Nowadays you see more people around because of the boat.
It passes by every ten days.
The boats have made me change my lifestyle.
Things are way easier than before.
You can get anything you need here in Chile.
Back in the day, you had to go to Argentina to get your supplies.
Well, here we have all the supplies I need
to eat.
There is meat and here we have more food.
I keep the chainsaw over there.
I have to stock up on food for the winter although I always buy potatoes.
There I have onions, garlic.
I write a list of what I need, I give money and they bring me everything with the boat.
I have so much food here. I could order smaller things, but
there's enough food for the whole summer.
Flour is what I have the most of and sugar.
And all of these boxes are full of food.
All of them are full, you can see them there.
Here we have some lard.
I ran out of jerky, so I will have to slaughter a cow.
I always make it out of beef.
There are a lot of flies in here.
This was a boat?
Yes, a boat.
Where did you get it?
I brought it from Puerto Aisén, on my way there.
I brought the boat from outside of Puerto Aisén, from Puerto Aguirres.
I brought it here and when it stopped working, I tore it apart and added some wood to it.
I brought the boat with the horses. I opened the inclosure and dragged it from there.
I brought it from over there.
These glasses came from the same boat.
They are really strong.
Perhaps the biggest change that has affected Faustino
is the unlikely friendship with an outsider,
whom he's given permission to live on his land.
This is where Lancaster stayed when they arrived.
He's a man that wanted to come in and do some work.
And stay here, since he had his own animals.
I redacted a document for Marcos,
in which I give permission for him to work here and bring his animals.
My name is Marcos Lancaster and we are in Faustino Barrientos' land.
How long has he been here? What did he say? Forty something years?
And I've only been here for ten months.
So, he's been alone all his life.
I met him a couple of years ago when I came here to work. I came with some friends
to build a cabin at the lake located just in front of his house.
My wife and I came over to talk to him.
We mentioned that we wanted
to move out of our land because it wasn't a good area to live in.
They're bad lands.
So we decided to talk to Don Faustino
to see if he would sell us his land some day
and move in here with our animals while helping him at the same time.
When I met him I realized that he was totally the opposite of what I heard about him.
He is a social person, he likes to talk, he has told me all his story.
I take care of my animals
and at the same time I take care of his animals.
He is more relaxed now that I'm here.
Because he's not alone anymore.
I visit him every day.
He has company now.
We're shearing the sheep, and then we're gonna kill it,
because we're going on an expedition tomorrow to the Green Lake
and we need to take food.
So, we're taking this guy.
Keep going. There's so much left.
See, it's like this.
I've never seen this before.
And apparently it's not quick; it takes like two minutes
after they slit its throat.
The insides are for the dogs.
It's like bones are coming off, skin is coming off...
It's our lunch for tomorrow.
Do you think it would be possible to live here without cattle or sheep?
Not here. Here you have to live off the cattle,
it's the only resource that we have to survive.
How could someone live out here without animals?
The most important thing I needed to survive out here were the animals.
You know how people think you can just live off the land?
Well, without animals it would be very difficult,
and it will always be that way out here.
People can only live off their livestock, they don't have other resources.
There is no agriculture here because the fields are not made for that.
We slaughter animals to eat them.
How did you learn to do that?
I learned by myself on the fields.
Life itself teaches you how to do it.
It teaches you how to slaughter a sheep, a cow,
to butcher them.
Are we taking this whole thing tomorrow?
Yes, that's what it's for.
And nothing goes to waste?
No.
If you want, you can leave something for a doggie or a cat.
Otherwise
you eat everything.
Watching Faustino kill the sheep and the casual nature of the act
reinforce the modes of survival of this land.
There was absolutely nothing for us to eat at the Green Lake,
which was a special place for him that he hadn't returned to for many years.
How long will it take us to get to the lake?
Let's see if we can make it in 6 hours.
