Step 2: Drum processing
I suggest you group all elements of the drums
to make easier sound processing and volume control, once we have made the drums.
To make the drum punchy and increase the brightness of the entire attack of the drums,
I advise you to use compression.
I use The Glue compressor because of its fast attack,
which is so important for dynamic processing of percussive elements,
but you can use whatever compressor you like.
It is very important to pay attention to setting the attack and the release when compressing the drums.
When you compress all the rhythm section
I advise you to set minimum attack in the compressor to make it work on every peak.
To create space, use the reverb.
Here I use the standard reverb of Ableton Live - Reverb.
At the beginning I process reverb for the kick and snare to make the reverb sound more clear,
this will also help me to set up the reverb decay time which is for the space size.
Ok, I like this space.
I use reverb on the channels “send” and “return”.
This will help me to create the right balance of the effect on different instruments.
The dry/wet *** should be 100% wet when you load reverb on the return-channel.
Now I set the reverb for hats,
and then for the percussion.
Let's hear how it sounds before and after processing.
Ok, Drums are done!
