Setting up an account to PubMed is fairly easy. The trick is actually going to be
setting up your PubMed account to recognize you as a UNC student so that you can get the full text of the articles.
through UNC or be able to easily request articles
through UNC. To start we'll go to 'Sign into NCBI' in the upper right-hand corner. Since we don't have
a username or password, we'll go 'Register for a NCBI account.'
And then just fill out this form.
And I'm not too worried about my security question because I'm really not worried about
somebody breaking into this account. And then when you're done, click on 'Create an account.'
So now you have an account with NCBI which means you have a PubMed account.
However, we still need to set it so that it recognizes you as a UNC student. For that we're going to go back up
and click on 'My NCBI' and click on and 'NCBI site preferences.'
and then look for the 'Outside Tool.' Notice that, right now, for the 'Outside Tool' none is selected.
Then you simply need to locate the name of your university.
So we'll go to U and then I'm just going to do a CONTROL + F
to find in 'Northern
Colorado.'
Place a dot in the radio button;
and then scroll down or scroll up to find a 'Save' button and save your preferences. PubMed will
now recognize you as a University of Northern Colorado student.
I'm going to scroll down the bottom of the page and go back to PubMed and do a quick search to show you how this works. I'm just going to
put in hemachromatosis.
All right. So I find an article that I like and I simply click on the title of the article;
and now I've got this 'Northern CO Full Text' button and this is what will link me into the UNC full
text. So here's my article. I'm looking for the PDF button to get the full text.
Now this one I generally wouldn't want because it's in French.
But let's see if the UNC libraries has it.
This one we don't have. Notice the 'Sorry the UNC Libraries do not have access to this article.'
Remember that that means we don't have physical or online access to the article.
But that's easy enough to remedy by requesting the article through Interlibrary Loan. It'll take us a few days to get it for you, but since you're
easily linked into the UNC system it's an easy request and there's only five lines that you'll need fill out.
