i think we're fortunate that we live in an area in which of there has been
a lot of focus on what a sustainable community means
we've got a number of community partners that have been working on the economic
sustainability and i think we're now understanding more and more the environmental component that needs to be part of that.
Equilibrium3 is a Duluth non-profit that focuses on creating an
economic and environmentally balanced programs that help our community come
more sustainable overtime you know we look at housing affordability and
we also look at the energy affordability gap you know if somebody can get into an
older, home leasing a property
they're going to rent
because there's a a lower dollar amount and that's what they can afford
uh... that's great but if they don't understand that that particular building
may cost them a lot
in energy then they've run into a problem with the either need to
keeping their house uh... very cold
or they need to have to move out and find another place to live
and we know when we're spending money on energy for the most part those
dollars are being exported from our communities so if there are ways in
which we can not only save energy which has all they have a good environmental
benefits um... but realized the economic savings in our community there's more
potential for those dollars to help with economic development here.
