This is a plaster piece. A round Jewellery box, a very detailed piece, with a lot of reliefs.
And it is exactly the type of piece that gets very pretty painted with gold paint.
First step you have to remove all the dust of the piece. Normally you have to clean these pieces.
Ah, it’s important this piece is dry. We cannot paint damp plaster.
So the first thing is to prepare the piece, remove all the dust, if needed you can sandpaper it, right?
There are always some rough parts from the plaster mold.
So pay attention, if necessary sandpaper it, if it is the case. And remove the dust.
When the piece is still damp, the plaster is damp, it is not as white as this one, it is a little bluish, grayish, you can notice.
And of course, you can notice it is damp or not on the touch.
So never paint a damp piece, it will peel off, the entire paint comes off...
Because the humidity has to evaporate, and all the paint comes off.
The paint we are going to work here is water based.
This paint here, I will paint the piece, the entire piece inside and out, with an Old Gold metallic paint.
DAIARA has a collection of metallic acrylic paint: Old Gold, Rich Gold...
...and has Bronze, Copper, there is the Silver, and they are all metallic paint.
So my suggestion to paint this piece, is the Old Gold metallic paint, if you want to take note of the recipe, do it.
Well, removing the dust, I will put the paint in a small container, which will be easier to work with.
Yeah, because in this piece I can use a large brush, because I will paint the entire piece, this makes my job really easy.
And then, I start to paint inside, I paint part by part; I paint a part and let it drying, and move to the lid...
...and like this the entire piece, inside and out.
This why rich and full of paint brushes can help, and doesn’t mark, and the covering is very nice.
You can see that this paint, has a fantastic covering, and you can see the glow.
So if you hone in this application, you will be giving only one coating.
Yeah exactly, and later some cover ups, right?
I like to use the vise, when painting a part, I can’t touch the piece...
...and so I put the piece in the vise and turn until I have covered the entire piece.
...
Look this gold beautiful, isn’t it? Did you see?
Fantastic! Here the feet, I painted the entire piece, all of it.
You go about painting and the plaster absorbs the paint and dries.
Ah, including the lid, same thing, all in gold.
Have you observed that I didn´t sealed the piece?
This is a plaster piece. You have to take some care with plaster, because it is very sensible...
If you hit it cracks, but this type of piece, you only find in plaster.
You will not find this type of work in ceramic, not like this with a lot of reliefs, with so much work on the top.
Look how beautiful and what a beautiful gold.
This is the Old Gold acrylic metallic paint, don´t forget and take notes of the recipe.
Well, after it is dry, if you want you can paint the entire piece, and let it dry by itself, don´t force to dry.
This is nice, because this way the plaster gets more resistant.
So the second step, after it´s dry, you apply on the top of this gold, the Fantasy Varnish.
This is the Fantasy Varnish, is the varnish that is full of glitter inside, it is interesting, that it has a bit of glitter.
There is the crystal, which is with the crystal glitter; there is also the gold and the silver.
Well, the crystal matches with any paint.
It´s more practical, but I could also use the gold one here, but I will use the crystal to be different.
So shake before use it, and put in a little container to ease the application.
Because here you are going to use a hard brush.
It can be the one you used to remove the dust from the piece, as long as it is clean, right?
Then you will apply the Crystal Fantasy Varnish on top of the gold paint.
Exactly! Look, the brush eases the work, because here you practically need to hit a little...
...so the glitter comes out of the brush and gets on top of the surface.
Yes, you are not sliding the brush; you are going to hit it this way.
Paint its entire surface. Cover all the gold with this glitter. That’s right.
You will apply the Fantasy Varnish only in the extern part.
You are not going to apply it on the down part of the lid, because it is going to glue, right?
As the plaster is very sensible, it is going to crack if you do so.
So, paint only on the top of the piece in the extern part.
You apply only one coating, and let me tell you a secret...
...the Fantasy varnish is very resistant, it’s a varnish that is very, very resinous...
...and so it is going to make the role of the sealer, because in the plaster you need to apply a sealer.
That’s right. The Fantasy Varnish is water based, and you will wet the brush in the water.
Just pay attention, the brush gets full of glitter, so after you wet in the water, the ideal is for you to clean the brush with Limpin.
Do you know that cream to clean brushes?
That’s right, pay attention and take notes of everything, all of this is important.
...
I fetched some water because now we are going to make patina, look how beautiful this piece is.
Look, the Fantasy Varnish is already dry.
I will make an oldish patina and use some bitumen here.
Do you know the DAIARA Gel Bitumen?
Yes DAIARA has Gel Bitumen. It is water based, fantastic.
It comes in these packages here, two sizes to work better.
Look this package is 80ml and this one is 170ml.
The Gel Bitumen doesn’t have smell; it is water based, and very easy to work with.
First you shake the bottle, open it, it comes sealed like this one, all the paint come sealed like this and you can see it is a bitumen.
It acts exactly like all the other bitumen. That´s why I fetched some water, because I will work with water based bitumen.
Yeah! You will grab a cloth, wet in the water, because in the time I’m removing the bitumen from the piece, of course, I will use a damp cloth.
Very simple, very easy, and the cool part is that it doesn’t smell.
Well, so let’s get a brush, I will get a soft one, I have one here.
So look here, you will apply the bitumen by parts, ops, I mess my finger, no problem, comes off with water, easy.
So, take a look, you apply the bitumen. Here the Fantasy Varnish has to be very dry, correct?
Yes! The ideal is let it drying alone, it gets more resistant, because the water evaporates, and the plaster gets even more resistant.
You apply in one part, grab a damp cloth, and wipe the bitumen off, look here, according to your taste.
If you want it lighter wipe more, if you want to give an older look wipe less.
Then according to what you want, and do it in the entire piece.
You are going to use little bitumen, push it through, yeah do it, and make the piece old, part by part.
From time to time you need to wash the cloth, leave the water on the side.
Leave a bucket with water beside you and you work the entire surface.
Look how it gets. This is the Brilhomax Varnish. It is DAIARA Brilhomax Varnish.
It is water based and gives a beautiful finish. A wonderful shine.
It is more like a wildcard; you can apply the Brilhomax Varnish on top of any type of paint.
Check it out; I am applying it on top of dry bitumen. That’s the difference, because it is Gel Bitumen.
The Gel Bitumen for being water based, after you made your piece old, that you have bitumen your work;
You can dry with thermal blower, or hair dryer. You dry it, if you want to be faster, or let it dry by itself.
And after it is dry I can even apply varnish, what doesn’t occur with other bitumen that is solvent based, right?
Oily bitumen. Because, if you apply the varnish on top of common bitumen, it will mess with the bitumen...
You will notice that it starts to come off in the brush.
Even being water based. Now, when it is on top of Gel Bitumen, it is easy, you can apply a varnish and give a shining finish.
But pay attention; do not apply varnish in these parts of the piece, where you will set the lid, where two parts join together, right?
Don’t forget that plaster is very sensible, so you don´t varnish this region here, neither the bottom nor the top part.
You will apply the Brilhomax Varnish only on the extern part of the piece, ok?
You can apply in it all, make it penetrates in the lines, corners, low reliefs and after you can dry with a blower.
It’s very practical. And the result is very beautiful.
Note this, it is very important!
Look the final result. It´s an old patina on top of a gold paint, with a special glow from the Fantasy Varnish.
Maybe you can’t observe the details, but actually looking at the piece, is a very pretty work, very different.
You can also make this work on wood or ceramic, right?
Depends on your taste, the piece you have on hands, ok?
The ideal is that there is a lot of a detail or reliefs, to give these effects...
...so the bitumen can penetrate in the corners and have this old patina.
See how beautiful it is? So, a suggestion of paint in plaster for you.
A plaster technic for you that have been asking me so much.
There you go, an idea for you to make in your house.
