Hello, I'm Andrea Close.
Welcome to MPI.
[theme music]
In today's MPI, the largest petition ever
presented to the House, changes to fair work laws,
and Speaker Bronwyn Bishop outlines her priorities.
Northern Australia has become a national focal point,
with a parliamentary committee investigating
the economic future of the region.
The committee will spend up to two months travelling across
three states.
We will be then getting grassroots community
consultation and submissions right across the region
into what people want to see in grabbing the opportunities that
are clearly there in tropical Australia.
And the challenges that we will be looking at
is we will be looking at energy, energy security, and also
water security, but also looking at how
we can grow our population, and what economic opportunities
we have available to us.
They're lightweight, easy to fly,
and can show you what you can't see.
Drones are becoming increasingly popular with governments,
companies, and hobby enthusiasts.
These little eyes in the sky have
built -in cameras which can record
and stream visions straight back to a handheld device.
But how do they impact on your privacy?
The House Social Policy and Legal Affairs Committee
has been told the legal picture is unclear.
What, I don't think we do have, first of all,
and I'd be the first to admit this from my position
is have a completely clear understanding
of whether those laws are going to do the job as they currently
exist, or whether because of even this patchwork nature
of some of those laws, there are going to be gaps which need
to be filled when we take into account
how these new technologies can be used within the community.
So I think one of the overarching questions that
would be relevant to pursue through a discussion such
as this is whether or not we think the laws are keeping pace
with technologies like this, and whether we do
think we have the right laws in place
