I originally was going to be a math teacher. At one point in time, I had an older brother
who's a math teacher, when I was younger. He'd come home and I'd watch him grade papers.
I like math, but we had a family friend who's an accountant, and that got me interested
there in that and my last year of high school, I took one accounting class. I originally,
when I started my college pursuit in Florida, I started as an education major, but about
my second or third semester I started shifting all over to accounting, and around that time
is when I learned about Mesa, so I just was able to get my associates degree and transfer
out. The university I was looking at going, intermediate accounting was one class. And
I think it was like one four-credit class at the campus closest to me where I lived
in Miami. It was a night class. There were about 35 to 40 students in it. And you come
out here and it's a class-- back then, it was a class of 15 to 20 and you had two semesters
of intermediate and if you made it through there, there was a good chance you were going
to successfully complete your accounting degree. There were some times in the classroom with
some of my professors I probably wasn't as enchanted with it as I am now, now that I'm
actually out using it, but just the passion that the teachers had for what they were teaching
us and the care and really, you know, just giving us good-quality accounting education.
I, when I started going through interviews for my jobs, I noticed that some of the people
I spoke with took note that my degree was from Mesa. They were aware of the accounting
program there and that it was recognized as a good program. The advice I would give someone
going to Mesa to get the most out of their degree would be to just really value your
time there, get involved, it's a great school, it's great culture. You know, I go over there
now and work with students and even though it's growing and has a larger number of students,
I feel like the culture itself has for the most part stayed the same. And there's just
something about college. I have friends from my childhood that are life-long friends but
I made some great friends there at Mesa that are now life-long friends. I've made business
associates there, you know, I've made some really good connections. And there's a lot
of good opportunities being there and just trying to delve into the college life.
