Osmond Lam: As far as you know, how many people have learnt the Wing Chun Broad Sword (Baat Jam Dao) from Yip Man?
Grandmaster Chow Sze Chuen : Yip Man's Baa Jam Dau, only 3 people know, but two are not here already (deceased), only me now.
Grandmaster Stephen T.K. Chan: Chau Tsi Chuen, Ng Chan and Wong Jok, two are not here.
Those who can fight the best in the old days, some have left the school of Yip Man.
Master Chow told me, in the old days, when Master Chow was practicing the Broad sword with Yip Man, if other people came in, they would all put down the swords.
Because it means, when I teach you, it doesn't mean you can teach others.
Seems that lots of people know how to practice swords nowadays, but we can't challenge them, because the one who taught is no longer here.
But there were only two to four persons who in fact learnt the Sword from Yip Man, no one can challenge that.
Just like footwork(kicking techniques), lots of people claim that they know, but Master Chow is one of the best in footwork(kicking techniques) known among the Wing Chun circle.
Grandmaster Chow Sze Chuen:Baa Jam Dau, in fact no one knows now. Because Baa Jam Dau is one of the most important techniques of Wing Chun.
If the Sifus(Masters) who are teaching students, do not know the techniques, they should feel very ashamed of it.
Someone saw [x] practicing it, he shook his head and
said ;if this was Baa Jam Dau, he should change the name to (Pork Chop Knife).:
I feel very heart aching,
people from the outside, want to earn money,
say they can teach Baa Jam Dau, then just take money.
This is not good
why I feel so lucky
because I never take on pupils from the outside, if no one introduce him to me, I won't take
Secondly, I don't talk about money
my Sifu was right what he told me once,
"don't treat this as a profession, treat it as an interest, because if you treat this as a profession, you have to take care of the rich, then you won't have time to teach the potential pupils".
I asked Sifu why.
He said when the rich ones came, you had to look after these rich ones,
then the ones who had real potential,
like Chan Tak Kwong (Grandmaster Chan),
he had to wait in the corner, you had to teach the rich ones.
Then that would be a failure,
you wouldn't have anyone to inherit the teachings.
So nowadays, I feel so proud that I had listened to my sifu.
Lots of people say that they are the pupils of Yip Man, but, to be frank,
I will say
how good you are or how powerful you are
the most important is the free sparing skills (fighting at a distance, also known as "Lut Sao").
Merely good in "Chi Sao" doesn't make you a good fighter.
