In the previous RefWorks tutorial you learned the basics of using RefWorks to manage citations and create bibliographies for your sources. In
this series of short tutorials we will look at how to export citations from different databases into RefWorks. Exporting citations from WorldCat is
easy and only requires a few simple steps. First, if you are off campus make sure you are logged in with your UWNetID to the proxy server. Then
go to the WorldCat search box, located on the UW Libraries Homepage at www.lib.washington.edu. Type in your search
terms, and then submit your query.Once you have located materials related to your research, you can export them to RefWorks individually or
as a group. To export a citation individually, simply click on an item’s link and then click the Cite/Export link at the top of the page. Select
the citation style of your choice and then click “Export to RefWorks.”If you have found more than one item of interest, and you would like to
export them as a group, you will first need to create a free WorldCat account, which only takes a minute. Click on “WorldCat Sign In” at
the top right of the WorldCat home page. It will ask you for your account information and also provide a link for creating a new account if you
do not already have one. Click on “Create Free Account” and fill in the information. After setting up an account you will also need to
create a new list to keep your citations organized. I’m naming mine English 101. Once you have done this click on any of the items you
would like to cite, and then select the list you want to keep them in by clicking on the “save to” drop down box, and then click save. A link to
view the newly saved items will appear, or you can click on your user name again to see all of your citation lists. Click on the “Citations View”
tab, and select the citation style you want to use from the drop down menu, along with the citations you want to export. Under the menu
that says “export selected references” choose RefWorks. After you have exported your articles, RefWorks should automatically open. If it does
not, check to see if your pop-blockers are on. You may have to enable them to accept pop-ups from WorldCat, and then repeat the process
again. After RefWorks opens you should see your article citations under the new imports folder; from here you can choose to move the
exported citations into a specific folder. For more information about exporting citations into RefWorks, click on the “Ask Us” link on the UW
Libraries Homepage to email, text, or chat with a librarian.
