The legacy of every great university
is the dreams, the achievements, and the stories of the people who are shaped by it.
Amazing stories indeed. Stories of the promise of the future,
stories of personal transformation. These stories come from our researchers,
from our scholars, from our students, our staff and our alums.
I am deeply honored to become the 8th chancellor of the University of California, Riverside.
I look forward to finding solutions for California, the country, and the world's future,
and training the next educated workforce to bring that to life.
By improving air quality, inventing green technology, and engineering alternative fuels,
the University of California, Riverside, is living the promise of a healthy environment.
By developing high-yield crops, designing eco-friendly buildings, and preserving our biodiversity,
the University of California, Riverside, is living the promise of sustainability.
By discovering new treatments for cancer and diabetes, training tomorrow's physicians,
and establishing California's next public school of medicine,
the University of California, Riverside, is living the promise of better health care.
By educating more first-generation college students than any other UC campus,
and by nurturing our future philosophers, writers and artists,
the University of California, Riverside, is living the promise of California's diverse heritage, and rich future.
As an immigrant, and a first-generation college student,
I know from personal experience the powerful role of education,
not only in my individual pathway, but also the shared journey of those around me.
In this era of unprecedented change, and unprecedented opportunity,
America is looking to its premier research universities,
for inspiration, for innovation, and for solutions to the most complex issues facing society.
I invite you to join our richly diverse, entrepreunerial university
as we shape a university for the future, and as we prepare for a better world.
