Ngati Kuri's signed off
on a $21m settlement deed with the Crown,
making it the 68th treaty settlement to date.
But the significant event
wasn't celebrated by all Ngati Kuri members,
as Oriini Tipene-leach explains.
A 29 year journey for Ngati Kuri is at an end.
150 people squeezed into Waiora Marae, Ngataki
to bear witness to the occasion.
In addition to the Crown's apology and $21m,
the Crown also agreed to a joint management plan
between the district councils and the iwi for 90 Mile Beach
and other areas and resources.
18 place names
will also have their bilingual counterparts made official,
including Rerenga Wairua.
There were around 30 people outside the meeting house,
most of whom were descendants of Ngati Kuri
that were against the settlement.
Their biggest concern...
The next step is the introduction
of the Te Hiku Claims Settlement Bill into Parliament,
followed by the transfer of settlement redress to Ngati Kuri,
Te Aupouri, Ngai Takoto and Te Rarawa.
