[J. Wade] Hi, I'm Jennifer Wade, your guest
host for the November 12th edition of IUPUI's The Spot.
The second annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant was Friday night, and the
event was a success. All contestants were from IUPUI, and the winner received a scholarship.
In a traveling art exhibit Joe LaMantia asks students to explain what democracy is by
writing their opinions on 8-foot-high walls. The Spot spent some time with Joe to learn more
about this moveable art form. [J. LaMantia] Behind me is "Writing on the
Wall" which is a project that started back in 2007 with the Office of the Vice Provost at
Bloomington campus, Indiana University. I was asked then to create a signature event which
would highlight graffiti art, and with the theme politics and the arts. And thinking about that,
I came up with the idea of not only working with graffiti artists, but also creating walls that
people could actually do graffiti on with the purpose of defining what they thought democracy
was and possibly what did it look like. No matter what anybody writes, it's just
perfect because if you don't like it, then it calls upon you to respond. And, so, it's been
my intention that these walls that I'm creating with the students at these campuses is
a way of creating dialogue and hopefully creating an atmosphere for people to think
about democracy. [J. Wade] IUPUI hosts the third annual Native
American Indian Education Conference Friday, November 14th from 9am to 4pm in Taylor Hall,
Room 115. The Native American Program will bring Native Americans and other IUPUI students
together to demonstrate how they use new media.
IUPUI's Season of Giving pairs you up with a family in need based on your ability to donate.
We spoke with Marty Posch for more details. [M. Posch]The IUPUI Season of Giving has
actually been on campus for a handful of years now. It was formerly called the Holiday
Assistance Program. Basically what this is, is it's a
n adopt-a-family program, so we're asking for IUPUI students and staff, schools, student
organizations, or just groups of friends to get together and to adopt a family from either the
Hawthorne Community Center or the Christamore House for the holiday season.
Well, basically all you need to do is you need go to iupui.edu/seasonofgiving. And what we're
asking is that for every person in the family that you would like to adopt, you set aside a
minimum of 50 dollars for this family. So if you're looking to adopt a family of three, we
ask that you raise at least 150 dollars, and then once you're matched with your family, you
can go out and you'll have a list of what the families need for the holiday season, and
you'll go out and purchase them for your family.
A lot of these families aren't asking for things they want. They're asking for things
they need. So they're asking for your basic things that we kind of take for granted.
They're asking for food. They're asking for blankets. They're asking for clothes for their
children. The deadline for registering for your familie
s is December 3 at the end of the day. We're asking everybody to register well in advance so
we can get them set up with their families as soon as possible. Once you register, you'll be
given all of your information on your family and go out and buy presents for your family. And
then we'll have a day on December 12 where you'll come and you'll drop off all of your
family's gifts. [J. Wade] Wayne “Buggin” Malone, Native American
rap artist, comes to IUPUI Friday, November 14th at 4pm. This NAMMY award-winning rap artist
combines the tradition of Native American music with the 20th century. Visit life.iupui.edu for
more information. The basketball season has just begun. This week
in Student Voices we asked you what you do to support the Jaguars. Here’s what you had to say
. [D. Krietemeier] Actually, I'm in the pep band
so I try to attend all of the games that are home games, and I also cheer with the
cheerleaders when they're cheering 'cause I know most of the cheers, and just have a good
time yelling and getting into the game. And just yeah, having a great time.
[T. Wolfe]Well, I am on the cheerleading squad so that means I cheer at the girls and guys games.
This is my first semester doing this. I've done it before in the past in high school, so
it's good to do it again. [C. Griffin] I support the Jaguars by going to
the basketball games. Last year I had a cousin that played for them so it was really exciting
to always go. And now it's just making it to those games. I'm really excited about
homecoming. It'll be in January, so that'll be a new tradition for IUPUI. It's something
that we've been working on all year. [T. Rossini] Well, I support the Jaguars. I
love the video of our mascot fighting for several rounds with the other team's mascot.
I've seen it probably a thousand times. So that gets my support.
[J. Wade] The women’s basketball team plays IU Southeast Wednesday, November 19th, at 7pm in
the Jungle. Show your JagTag to get in for free.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Check us out next Wednesday to meet The Spot’s upcoming
guest host by viewing our podcast at jagtv.iupui.edu.
I’m Jennifer Wade, and thanks for Spotting us!
