Some people in Arizona, four Republicans, aren't even waiting. The District Republican
Chairman says I don't want to take a bullet from anyone, and fearing violence from Tea
Party activists, Anthony Miller, who is the Arizona Legislative District 20 Republican
Chairman, and several others are just, they're out, they're done. Miller's a 43-year-old
former campaign worker for McCain. He says verbal attacks and blog posts from members
of the Tea Party had him fearing for his safety, and he's all done. He just left. And you know,
one detractor has even made his hand into the shape of a gun pointed at Miller, this
chairman who has left. And obviously, Sarah Palin will say it wasn't a gun that was pointed,
it was just a surveying symbol, just like on her home page.
Louis: Right.
David: Is the real shock here, by the way, is the real shock that this guy resigned or
that there are black Republicans who support McCain in Arizona? Makes about as much sense
as gay Republicans, to me. "I wasn't going to resign, but decided to quit after what
happened Saturday with Gabrielle Giffords," of course, previous Saturday. "I love the
Republican Party, but I don't want to take a bullet from anyone."
Some people are emailing me saying if you're not willing to take a bullet for the country,
you shouldn't serve anyway. And I couldn't think of a more ridiculous argument. We can
make that argument for the military, right, Louis? I mean, if you join the military, presumably
you have to be willing, or it's implicit you would...
Louis: Right. Who becomes a politician saying to themselves, "You know, I understand that
there's a chance I'll be shot, but I'm going to do this anyway."?
David: Right.
Louis: I don't think that goes through their minds.
David: No, I think it's silly to say that that is part of being... I mean, think about
it, if you're a lower-level elected official, you're implicitly saying you're willing to
be shot for your country? A city councilor in a city of 100,000 people is saying he's
willing to be shot, and that's just part of it? You're the assistant city clerk somewhere
in the Midwest, you're ready to be shot at any time? I don't think it makes sense at
all.
Louis: No.
