A majority of college students today are making financial choices that could have a big impact
on their future. That’s why Pittsburg State is being proactive when it comes to helping
students make the best financial decisions possible. One way to help students is to get
the message out about financial literacy and the Battling Bad Finances event aims to do
just that. Katie Jones-“We hope that they learn financial literacy is relative to them.
We have our display in the student center and we actually had PSU alumni write in and
explain how the financial decisions they made at Pitt State affect them now and in the future.
So we’re hoping to get the point across to students that financial literacy is important
right now.” The Battling Bad Finances event was put on by Pitt State due to a grant they
received from a company called Cashcourse. It’s designed to help students get off on
the right foot instead of a crashcourse and for Rebecca Roach, she hopes students will
hear the message and run with it. Rebecca Roach-“That building a budget, to taking
care of your finances, it doesn’t have to be something that’s painful or dreadful,
it can actually be a personal challenge and definitely a personal achievement. To have
taken ownership of your finances to think ahead and forecast a bit on your financial
needs, to really take ownership of that whole process and to know that it’s not rocket
science.” Of course it always helps if you have an incentive for students to actually
participate and for any student willing to give up a little bit of time and effort you
could win a NOOK COLOR. All you have to do is go to the website link listed below, click
budgeting and financial planning, then create a budget for yourself. Fill out the income
vs. expenses worksheet and turn it in at 213 Russ Hall by NOON Friday 10/7/11.
