Hi there! It's Ingrid Owens from CameraShy Take 52 Challenge & www.BeginnersPhotographyBlog.com.
Thank you very much for joining me for our first critique for one of the images of the
Take52 group. I've decided that this is an easier way for me to comment and participate
in the group since the group has taken off exceptionally this year so hopefully you can
benefit from me looking at one of the group's images and at least the photographer can benefit
as well. So don't forget if you want your image to be included in the possibility of
being critique on the blog please tag me in your image when you upload it to the album
from now on. Ok, so the 1st week, we are looking at here is week 4 and the image that I have
chosen to have a feedback is from Katie Hunter's and the theme was "Creamy" Katie has taken
a really awesome shot here of some mashed potatoes & it's funny that I have chosen this
mashed potato as the subject because even though I am from Ireland I am not a fan of
potatoes or mashed potatoes or any other kind of potato. But anyway let's go ahead and take
a look at this image and see what Katie has done with it. So, we can see that it is the
mashed potato is creamy in the bowl and is being mixed with the beaters and we can see
that Katie has used a nice slow shutter speed to get the image of the beaters twirling around,
so you can see the movement in those beaters and so we get that feeling of motion in the
image. So, it's not just an image but it's quite a dynamic image. Of course it's the
mashed potato, the subject itself is creamy and I think that has been captured very well
in the shot to due to the nice soft lighting although the highlights are a little blasted
out here along one side, I feel that's probably just going to happen because it so contrasting
here and it has very dark shadows here, So maybe that could be brought back a little
bit in post production. So, Katie has used an aperture or an F-stop of F2 which means
that she's got quite a shallow depth of field going on here, so meaning there is only a
small portion of the image that is actually in focus, and actually I think that this shot
could have been improved if a little bit larger portion of the image is in focus because you
see that really in focus is right here. So, I would have preferred if you have to use
F3-4 something that is going to give a little bit more in focus of those creamy mashed potatoes.
And when you do that you will notice then that your exposure is going to be a little
bit under and I'm not sure whether you shot in manual or aperture priority or shutter
priority or one of those but either way it is because you are letting less light in the
aperture then you have to adjust something else. Since you wanted to keep that slowish
shutter speed here to capture that movement of the beaters you probably would have find
yourself to rank up that ISO. Composition wise I think it's good maybe a little bit
even too close, you could have pulled back a little bit more then we might have seen
more of the *** to get a better feel but I actually think that it is ok but I probably
mess with the composition maybe put it off a little of the beaters to one side and maybe
a little bit of this bowl in here. Pull it back over to the left hand side might have
helped it out a little bit. But technically it is very good and I also feel that perhaps
you may have been able to adjust your white balance although I do know that mashed potatoes
are definitely more on the yellow side rather than perfect white so it's quite well balanced
but I do feel that theirs a little bit of a color cast coming in here to this one side
because it should have been more of an even color but maybe if the focus is a little bit
more extended here & that wouldn't have happened if you haven't use a narrower aperture then
you would have been able to see the creaminess of those potatoes and even though you would
still be able to maintain the slow shutter speed on the beaters. If you would like to
be included in the Take 52 Critique next week on the blog please just tag me in your image
and make sure that you upload your images to the album for the week and next week's
theme is I think it's already been announced which is "eyes" so that should be interesting
one. But upload it to the album so that I can see everything all at one time. So thank
you very much and we will see you on Facebook.
