-(GIRL SCREAMS) -What are you doing? Get away.
NARRATOR: Kids love to climb,
and accidents can happen in seconds and last a lifetime.
G'day, I'm Rob Palmer and I want to show you a couple of simple things
that you can do to keep your kids safe at home.
First, move anything that the kids can climb up on
away from your windows
and from balconies too.
Make sure they can't climb on the railings or squeeze through.
Railings with gaps wider than 125 millimetres are a risk.
And don't be fooled by flyscreens.
They're pretty flimsy,
and designed to keep insects out, not your kids in.
They're simply not strong enough.
You could consider bars on the windows or one of these -
a safety net - but they will cost more to install.
Your most affordable option is just to lock the windows,
so that they can open, but no more than 125 millimetres.
That's not enough for a small body to fall through.
And the good news - that's a lot easier and cheaper
than you might think.
You'll find window safety locks
at baby shops or the local hardware store,
and you can buy them online too.
There's plenty to choose from.
Look out for the kind that allow the window to open,
but only as much as you allow it to.
Locks vary in price and type, depending on your windows.
If you're not sure what to get,
take a photo of your windows and get advice at the store.
These days, more families are choosing to live in apartment blocks.
If you live above the ground floor,
you need to be aware of the danger for your kids,
or someone else's kids.
Around 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia each year.
That's about one child every week.
Kids don't fly, and accidents like this can be prevented.
So give yourself piece of mind and install window locks.
But do it today, because too late is no good.
