I think probably the best thing about being a student is the initial freedom that you
get from leaving home and living independently, but minus the responsibility. You can wake
up and immediately start drinking. Yeah. Meeting lots of people. They are all incredibly intelligent,
and articulate, and can have all arguments and conversations with you you get to do a
lot and go to all these crazy places.
It's like a holiday camp. It is, isn't it?
There's an unlimited supply of great people to meet. There's a great atmosphere of togetherness
I think. You can put off reality for three years and enjoy yourself. You can have dinner
at 10 o'clock at night if that's the way it works for you. You can get up when you want
provided you don't have lectures to get to.
If you want to work at midnight, because you work well at midnight, you can do it. If you
work well at 6am, go and do that as well. No one's gonna be like, you should be going
to bed now. In tutorials, you get the opportunity to learn from a world expert in your field.
You're always constantly pushed, which is absolutely great.
It's totally different to college or school. Yeah, it's a lot more relaxed.
Freedom. Everyday, you never know what might happen, it's a completely new experience.
Midnight life, which is amazing. That's what being a student's about.
Having no money whatsoever. Being poor! Your bank balance only ever goes down. The fact
that everything's going up by three times the amount is only gonna make it worse in
terms of debt.
Pesky lectures. Being hungover too often. Definitely early mornings. You have to deal
with accommodation. Organizing your life. Laundry. Having to learn to do your own. Remembering
to check your bank account and see you have enough money for rent, and getting the washing
done. I'm doing my own laundry. Big thing.
Having a lot of work and a bit of an essay crisis and feeling like you won't be able
to do something. Late nights. Having to work weekends. Being able to motivate yourself
and do all the independent study. It does take a lot of willpower, determination. Work
can be quite annoying sometimes, especially on a sunny day when you've got exams the next
week and you have to be there revising. Especially if you are not so prepared for it and you
haven't been away from home much before, and then you come to university, a new town, new
place, so many new people.
It can be a little bit overwhelming at first.
The independence, whilst being a brilliant thing, is also quite a scary thing. You have
to deal with a lot of things you didn't really realize were things before you got here. It
can be quite difficult at the beginning, but all I'd say is that if you're in, you'll realize
soon enough that you can do it. Just throw yourself into it, and it all works out in
the end.
