This is Governor Steve Beshear ... About Kentucky.
As Governor, I know Kentucky has so many beautiful and memorable things – many of them that
can’t always be packaged or summarized in a single word or product.
As a result, we sometimes fail as a state to take advantage of them as amenities in
marketing Kentucky as a stimulating place to live, to work and play.
But we’re going to change a little of that.
With the help of the Kentucky Arts Council, my administration is establishing what’s
called the Kentucky Cultural Districts Certification program.
This program will allow communities across the state to apply for a formal designation.
A cultural district is a well-recognized, labeled area of a community featuring a high
concentration of cultural amenities and activities that attract local residents and visitors
alike.
The program can be effectively developed in small rural areas, as well as large urban
areas – areas of all shapes and demographics.
In addition to being part of a statewide branded program, designated communities will receive
focused training and educational opportunities.
Obviously there will be a benefit in the arts and cultural sector as far as attracting visitors
and tourist dollars.
In other words, this is an economic development tool and the bottom line is that we will see
a lot of tangible benefits from this program.
The Kentucky Arts Council is currently accepting applications, and I know that they can’t
wait to get started.
You can find out all of the details on the council’s website at artscouncil.ky.gov.
We hope you will join us in this program to foster civic pride across our great Commonwealth.
