If you have a good idea
of what you're looking for, the CAT's "Advanced Search" can help you find what
you need more quickly, the "Advanced Search" let's you combine searches
for example, you can specify both the title and author
of the book you're looking for, most of these search options are
pretty straight foward, but you might not be familiar with the Library of Congress
subject headings, which is an important feature of the Advanced Search
Subject headings are like tags, they are specific words
and phrases attached to a catalogue record that identify what the
book or movie or whatever item is primarily about
most importantly they are what we call a controlled
vocabulary, which means that all items about a particular topic are tagged
with the same words, because they are applied consistently
they become a powerful search tool, using the example topic of
"Leadership and Public Administration" I happen to know that public administration
is a Library of Congress subject heading
I'm going to combine the subject heading search with the keyword "leadership"
and I'm going to limit my search results to materials in English
if you compare these search results to our previous "quick search" results
you'll find that the top items in this list are much more
relevant to my topic
