Hello, and welcome to the Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
This tutorial explains how to set up VPN access so that you can access the Library’s online materials from your home computer or laptop.
VPN access will also enable you to use your on- campus IT storage files
and to access your professors’ or students’ outboxes from off-campus locations.
Let’s say for example, that you were working from home and wanted to improve your writing.
So you decided to look in the library’s catalog for some inspiration from the famous writing instructor, Peter Elbow.
Here you see that the library has several of Elbow’s books available.
You can place a hold on them to pick up next time you are in the library.
But wait, what’s this?
Oh, wonderful, a video of a lecture that he has given.
Click the Web Link.
OOPS! Oh, you don’t have access to this resource because you are not logged in through a campus computer.
Never fear, with your UCCS login and password you can access this video, and countless other resources that are available through the
Kraemer Family Library. Let’s navigate back to the Library’s home page.
Here you can find a link that is labeled Library VPN,
and that will take you through to a link to the IT Help Desk’s VPN Information Page.
If you would like to go directly to this page, the address is:
http://www.uccs.edu/helpdesk/off-campus.html
This page has two buttons near the top that will begin downloads of the auto-installer for the Library VPN,
one is for PC and the other is for Mac.
If you are using a screen reader to navigate the page, the buttons are tagged
“Windows VPN Auto Installer”
or “Mac VPN Auto Installer,” respectively.
You can also set up VPN access manually.
Navigate to IT’s links near the top for the machine that you used
(both are tagged “MAC” at this time,
but the Mac link is located above the Windows link).
You can scroll down and choose your operating system
Which will take you to a link for a
detailed instructional guide for installing your VPN manually.
But for now, for the purpose of this tutorial, let’s navigate back to the auto-installer.
Click the button that corresponds to your machine,
and you will save the file. Once it is done downloading, you will choose to run it.
Once your download has completed successfully, you will need to restart your computer.
Once the installation is completed successfully, you will need to open your network access and connect to the VPN.
I am using a Windows machine; if you need more detailed instructions for a Mac, you can find them on the IT website.
Basically you will find two choices: there is the UCCS Library VPN (Transporter)
and the UCCS Resources VPN (Voyager)
Choose Transporter for access to the Library’s resources.
Voyager will connect you with the on-campus IT accounts.
Click Connect. Here you will enter your UCCS Username and Password.
Enter UFP as the Domain.
Click Connect again, and you are in!
Now, let’s return to the Library's Home Page.
Search again in the catalog for Peter Elbow.
There’s the video!
Let’s give it a try.
Great! Here it is! You can watch this video from home.
When you are finished watching your video or using your resources, it is important to
remember to disconnect from the VPN.
The security settings on the VPN server can prevent you from accessing other resources.
If you would like to connect to Voyager to access your on-campus IT account, or your professors’ outboxes/public boxes,
use the same process: Choose Voyager, click connect
Input your UCCS username and password and UFP as the Domain. Then connect.
Detailed instructions for connecting to the on- campus servers can be found on the IT website.
You will need access the Excelsior server for student accounts
Here they are. They are listed alphabetically.
Staff or faculty accounts are on the Enterprise server.
If you have a professor, you can get in to their public boxes here.
Once again, when you are done you will want to make sure that you disconnect.
That is it in a nutshell. Now you can connect to the VPN
and access library resources from any computer, even when you are off-campus.
Please remember that if you need help with research or using the library, you can chat, call, email, or text the Reference Desk anytime during
library hours.
