Today is the Day of Mari Literacy.
For the first time in history, this day is being officially celebrated in Vienna,
with esteemed guests from near and far,
with contributions ranging from the serious scientific to the less scientific.
Monika Schötschel-Fleischer from the University of Hamburg
is currently in Vienna for one semester as a guest professor.
I have been working with Mari for some time now.
My studies of the language have primarily been from a sociolinguistic perspective.
I'm really enjoying my time at the University of Vienna
where there is such wide interest in the Mari language and culture.
Dear friends!
On this day, we wish the Mari people all the best in preserving and developing their language.
May Mari literacy reach new heights in the age of information technology,
may the language find a firm footing in the world of computing,
and may it find a clear path into the centuries to come.
May Maris speak their native language more,
may they use it more in writing,
may they pass it on to their children and their grandchildren!
May there be the occasion to celebrate the Day of Mari Literacy a hundred, thousand years from now!
Best greetings on the Day of Mari Literacy
