Hi this is Kim Eierman from EcoBeneficial bringing you more useful gardening tips to
improve our environment. I'm standing in front of a water feature that's a huge attractor
for birds and also some beneficial insects. Now, if you are not lucky enough to have a
pond, or a lake or a stream on your property, you can still include or a man-made feature
like this with running water, or even a bird bath. Now, water is the number one thing that
birds have the hardest time finding on their own and it's the number one thing we forget
to include in our landscapes. So make sure that you do include at least a bird bath.
If you do have the opportunity to have something with running water -- even better because
you'll have a lot more bird activity that way. You'll even see that there are lots of
insects that will approach the water as long as you give them sloping sides to enter safely.
So make sure to include a water feature in every garden!
With any water feature you've got to keep it clean for birds. So with something like
this -- a man made feature -- it probably has both a pump as well as a filter so it
does the job of cleaning for you. But with a bird bath, you're the one that's got to
do the job. So what I like to do is splash out the water out at least once a day to prevent
mosquito larva buildup and to keep the water clean for birds. Then, on a weekly basis,
I scrub the bird baths out to make sure that there is no build up of any bacteria. And
that way your birds are going to drink safely and cleanly.
