In Cuba, the official discourse has insisted that racism
is a social phenomenon from the past.
However, more and more Afro-Cubans complain about
it being still in practice, which allows the positions of power in the island
to be held by an overwhelming majority of white people.
This is a report that comes from within the island.
Racism is a form of discrimination against people,
referring to the race,
skin tone or other physical characteristics of people.
It has as intended purpose or result, the reduction or cancellation
of human rights of those discriminated against.
Do you think racism is practiced in Cuba?
Currently.
Yes.
Yes, yes, of course.
Yes, I do think...
In small things.
It does exist.
I think not with the strength it existed before.
But it exists, it exists.
Everyone is equal, the only difference is just the color.
But everyone has the same rights...
The blood runs through the same veins.
Originated from old practices where black people lived
as victims of social exclusion,
racism on the island still retains a habit that keeps blacks
under the accusing finger, like strangers,
or just like they do not deserve the place they occupy.
Racism is an injustice.
There is no place in this world for racist people.
In Cuba, there are organizations that defend human rights
and aim to stop racism.
One of the things these activists point out
is that the positions of power in the island
are held mostly by white people.
My opinion on racism is that...
It is something that has been addressed for a long time.
And that it has not yet been abolished.
The ruling political scientist, Esteban Morales,
recently admitted that discrimination and racism on the island
are the result of imperfections that Cuban society
has not solved yet.
