(Cesco) "Basically, at that time, we just moved into our new house during our first year in London
around about 10 in the night we started hearing "tick, tick..."
we notice that something is dripping but we can't figure out what it is...
we look to the floor and we spot a pool of water
because it was dripping from the ceiling..
i think a pipe broke or something..
and about 30 mins later the whole house got completely flooded
there was water pretty much everywhere so we had to move all of our music equipment"
(Nico) "Initially, when everything started, we pretty much laughed about it..
like that scene from "The Sword in the Stone" with Merlin, we started placing pans here and there and just laughing away..
(Cesco) "Yes exactly, there were pans and pots all around because in the meanwhile the water started leaking from several spots"
and after one hour the situation completely got out of our hands, so we called the landlord
this happened once again in February during the night
I was lying down on my bed and I could feel dripping over my foot, it was 3AM
I look up, and I noticed that the ceiling is leaking again
In fact, since this tragic experience
I mean, it is pretty awful waking up at night soaking wet
...you panic...
...so we wrote a song on this, which is in our first EP
and is called "Gettin' Flood"
and there are several water samples..."
(Cesco) The project was born in 2005
mainly due to the relationship that was there between me and him
first of all, a friendship
and since we were both passionate about music, we consequently started the band
we both came from different musical backgrounds
especially if you consider what we do now...
I used to play the drums
I still play it now - it is my main instrument -
and he used to play the bass
(Nico) Originally we used to jam
with the drums and the bass
and everything started from there
from those afternoons when we did not feel like studying
(Cesco) In september 2008 we both left
.. we said to ourselves "let's go to London" ...
(Nico) "Especially to pick up the language, like my dad wanted me to
and after 19 years spent at home...
(Cesco) "Yes, exactly, we had that typical teen hype when you say to yourself "I want to go live by myself"
and since then we started off a whole new chapter...
Back then, we produced our first EP
Our first EP is called 'The Westbourne Terrace EP'
and is called after the name of the street we used to live in
It is a very spontaneous piece of work,
because it is a general picture of what our first year away from home meant to us
(Nico) "Every single night, from 8pm up to very late...
(Cesco) "up to late in the morning!"
(Nico) We re-arranged several songs, some of them were 3 or 4 years old already
trying out different versions for the same song
trying to find the best solution - as we usually do -
the best sound
for each single thing and for each single detail
...we are very harsh on ourselves!
(Cesco) "Well, that is how it is supposed to be!"
(Nico) "True..."
(Nico) 'Any Dyslexic Way to Say Hello' which came out in January 2012
there are 5 songs
but they are actually from different periods
(Cesco) Some of them were B-Sides from the first EP
others, perhaps, written 2 months before we started to record it
so they are all of a different nature
(Nico) so we arranged and produced it in less than 3 weeks
I remember that, every night,
as we used to live in this house which was very ugly and dirty
and I had this extremely tiny room
and my speakers
and we were packed while working
...pretty much like now...
we spent entire nights re-arranging the songs, since we tried different versions for each song
Applying a very meticulous approach
which is what makes this album differs that much from the first one
because we do really care about this...
(Cesco) Obviously we had at that time, a bigger set of skills comparing to when we produced our first EP
(Nico) "It was easier"
(Cesco) "But it's not that we planned it in advance
it just came naturally taking more care of the tech aspect
We try to find a right point of balance
between the alternative music
or the one which is less often likely to be listened
(therefore the way to conceive it)
and a more traditional / typical 'wrap'
I think that main purpose that an artist has to aim to
is to be able to communicate
because at the end of the day, if you create something which no one else likes apart from you
then the art - and consequently what you do -
ends up being nothing more than a *** you have alone in your room.
Contrariwise, according to my opinion
what you aim for, is to reach out to people
and to notice that you have actually communicated something
which I think is the best gratification you can get out of what you do..
no matter if it is a song, a paint, a video or a movie
I personally think - according to how I perceive making and creating art -
and consequently everything I do
trying your best to communicate something to someone
and so when you get to that point...
It's beautiful!"
"The artwork was made by a friend of ours - Holly -
and I think she totally got her mind around the idea and the mood of the album
because they are both very colourful and over detailed
For what concerns the live aspect
(Nico) Playing here was a new experience
especially because of the difficulty of controlling and taking care of a lot of different things
when it is just the two of us
(Cesco) "We have re-arranged the songs
to make them playable and impressive live wise
because I do not think it is fair pressing 'play'
and playing back the music from the laptop where all sorts of pre-recorded instruments are performing
while you just play the guitar over it
..it's just sad
and totally disrespectful towards who paid or traveled to come listen to you
so we usually have laptops, controllers, and live instruments
which are primarily guitars and percussions
Even though,
Just because I love playing drums,
the ideal live set we hope to be able to perform with one day
will be the one where we can integrate the drums to...
(Nico) We still have time!
(Cesco) "We do!"
(Cesco) Over the years London has always had an important Undeground Music Culture
there's a continuous movement
of new genres and music popping out
ending up leading the trends
Therefore, artistically and musically speaking
it has been - and still is - a great and stimulating experience
because going to clubs is not just getting wasted or dancing
but is literally getting to know and to always listen to new music
