Q: What kinds of services does the Career Center offer?
DeAnna Anglin (Student Coordinator): We do all kinds of things. We do a lot of resume
review, cover letters, a lot of the business documents you’ll need for jobs or even for
internships. We do personal statements; we can help you with personal statements. We
have assessments that we do if you are undeclared or declared in a major, but don’t know if
that’s right for you. If you want to come take an assessment it may help you take those
resources and look up more options and see if you’re more interested in something else
that’s available. We have a program Career Counseling, where our practicum students come
in and they actually spend one on one time with you every week to kind of help you decide
what major might be best for you. We have all sorts of other resources that are available.
We have books, we have magazines, we have a bunch of handouts that you can take as well.
Mainly when the students come in, the handouts are going to be on the left side and they
are resumes, cover letters, interviewing, curriculum vitas, guide to etiquette dinners,
guide to accepting a job, all kinds of handouts. A lot of them are located on our website as
well. Q: What are some common misconceptions students
have about the Career Center? Anglin: A lot of them come in thinking we
only take appointments; we are actually walk-in 9-5, Monday-Friday. And a lot of people come
in thinking that our assessments will actually tell them what major they should choose, when
that really isn’t the case. The assessments that we have will guide you in the right way,
comparing your abilities, values and interests. And the career specialist that is working
with you is able to give you resources that relate to those results that you get, to help
guide you in the right way – but it won’t necessarily pick the right major for you,
that’s your job. We are trained paraprofessionals. A lot of people get worried when they come
in and it’s another student helping them, but it actually helps us relate to the customer
that we’re helping. We have done a hundred hours of training and then some more, so we
are qualified to help with anything, any questions you may have. And if we aren’t the most
qualified or the most help for you personally, we can find the best help for you.
Q: Where can students go to get more information on the Career Center?
Anglin: The Career Center is located right across from Ellis Library, right next to McDonald’s,
if you go to the Student Success Center you just take the stairs down. (The McDonald’s
in now closed) You’ll see us right there, you’ll see our front desk and if you look
to the right you’ll see all of our resources. And you’ll see someone at the computer ready
to greet you. There’s people in the back usually working on projects related to the
Career Center. And when the person greets you, they’ll get your student number and
ask you what you need help with today. And then after that we’ll see who’s the best
person to work with you, and then you’ll be on your way. The computers are used for
when we help someone with hiremizzoutigers which is the Career Center’s online website
to find jobs, internships, to start their profile there. And then we also use the computers
for assessments that we have. We have two assessments that require computer usage and
also online resources that we have available as well. Hiremizzoutigers is really easy.
You just long on to hiremizzoutigers.com and you make a profile with your pawprint and
you make a password, and you add your resume, and once it’s been checked by one of us,
you have access to the entire site. The website has all of our handouts, so it’s pretty
intense. It has resources for students, faculty, parents, prospective students, all kinds of
stuff. We have links to International Students Career Center, we have links to work study,
links to Jumpstart, A Way With Words and Numbers, all kinds of stuff on there. And it’s really
an immense amount of information, so it’s kind of hard to explain it all at once, but
like I said we have the handouts, we have podcasts and videos about how to find a job
or interviewing skills and stuff like that. Also if they wanted to call in, they can schedule
a mock interview, which is just the same thing as an interview, set up the same way, real
questions that we get from actual employers and a practice for if they want to practice
before they have the actual interview. Career Center 201 Student Success Center – career.missouri.edu
