Hi! Did that just make you feel uneasy? Then you could be superstitious of back cats! But,
where does this superstition come from? The superstition actually dates back to the middle
ages. Trust me you would not have wanted to be a black cat back then! If you could pinpoint
a particular time where black cats became unlucky you could go back to the year 1232.
It is said that Pope Gregory IX issued a papal bull called Vox Rama that vilified black cats
starting an era of slaughtering that lasted into the nineteenth century beginning in 1232.
Later, during the witch hysteria people often believed black cats to be witch's familiars
- that is assisting them in witchcraft. They also believed that black cats could be reincarnates
of witches. Countless black cats were burned during the middle ages - especially in England.
If a woman accused of witchery got burned at the stake often times they would burn her
cat along with her believing her spirit would live on in the cat. The only thing that could
save a black cat is a white spot in their fur no matter how small. This is known as
a angel's mark or god's finger. Black cats aren't considered unlucky all over the world.
In Egypt, all cats are considered sacred including black cats. In present day England and in
Japan black cats are actually considered to be lucky. To this day, black cats and witches
continue to be symbols of Halloween. The next time you see these symbols just consider what
their past was. Anyway, that concludes this edition of learning stuff. If you found this

next time and Happy Halloween!
