Anto Desmond NUIM Access - MY STORY
I'm going to start off by talking about applying for courses.
The CAO seemed like gibberish to me. Thankfully teachers at my school were more
than willing to help me with it.
I found out about the HEAR scheme through
a representative from the Higher Education Access Route who visited my school.
I knew that I could benefit from it and applied as soon as I could.
You may not already be aware of the HEAR scheme. The Higher Education Access Route is an initiative
taken on by colleges and universities to ensure people of all backgrounds have the chance
at getting a third level education.
STARTING AT NUIM AND LAUNCHPAD
What is Launchpad?
A couple of days to have the craic and get used to your future campus.
During Launchpad you will stay on campus in order to get used to your future surroundings.
It is one of the most beneficial aspects of being an Access Student.
By the end of it, you will know college like the back of your hand
as well as being introduced to staff at the Access Office.
STARTING AT COLLEGE
Don't spend all of your money in the first couple of weeks.
For most of us, starting college comes with a new type of independence.
Naturally, this makes us want to go absolutely mental and splash the cash.
JOIN CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
If I could only recommend one thing you do when you begin college,
it would be to join Clubs and Societies.
It's a great way to meet friends with common interests and get involved in campus life.
In first year, I joined the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
I got really involved in the activities and made great friends.
There are awards for Clubs and Societies.
Last year, I was nominated for best first year in a Society
and we won the award for best Pastoral Society.
I am now a member of the executive and love taking part.
Whatever your interests are, there's a Club and Society for you,
and if there isn't, you can start your own!
ACCESS - IT'S NOT JUST LAUNCHPAD
Being an Access Student means:
People who know what they're talking about,
Help and Support that you can and should use,
Staff you can talk to,
and Student+
