Earthquakes strike the Kermadec Islands, Chile, Panama and New Zealand. On Wednesday, December
21, the National Emergency Office of Ministry of Interior and Public Security reported that
three temblors hit Chile, one of magnitude-4.1striking 46 kilometers southwest of Santa Cruz that
was felt in the central regions of O’Higgins and Maule. The second was a 3.9-magnitude
tremor that was felt in the Lakes Region as it struck 40 kilometers southeast of Ancud,
while the largest, a 5.0-magnitude quake, was reported by the Seismological Service
of the University of Chile to have struck in the northern region of Tarapacá, 30 miles
south of Camilla. Also on Wednesday, a quake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred
in Panama’s western province of Chiriqui, which borders Costa Rica. This was the sixth
to strike the country since the previous Sunday.
In the early hours of Thursday, December 22, a temblor measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale
was recorded south of the Kermadec Islands. Centered 188 kilometers south of L’Esperance
Rock, the tremor was reportedly felt in Auckland, New Zealand 711 kilometers away. This region
of the world was again rattled on Friday as a series of tremors hit the city of Christchurch,
New Zealand, which is still recovering from a fatal and destructive quake in February.
Two of the temblors on Friday measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, with a third that was
5.3 in magnitude, causing busy shopping malls to be evacuated and a temporary shutdown of
the airport as a precaution. Extensive liquefaction was also noted in several areas, as the quakes
forced water up through the shaken soil, with flooding that resulted. Some rock falls and
further damage to buildings such as Christchurch Cathedral were also observed, and residents
reported shock and fear at the multiple tremors. However, no tsunami warnings were issued and
there fortunately appeared to be no damage to houses or roads.
Thank Heaven for the general safety of all those in the quake-shaken regions. May such
potential dangers be curbed as our more harmonious lifestyles help ensure the Earth’s stability
as a vegan world.
Supreme Master Ching Hai wants to convey this message of gratitude to all governments, organizations
and relief workers from every corner of the world:
“Thank you, all the international and national help that brings care and necessities to afflicted
victims. Thank you all all the relief workers for taking time and forsaking your own comfort,
even traveling great distance on unfavorable roads and conditions to bring love and assistance
to people in time of need. May Heaven bless you abundantly for your generosity and noble
sacrifice.”
