This screencast shows how to use REMM web site interactive tool illustrating the Time
Phases of the Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) This is the tool.
First, look at the long, horizontal colored rectangle along the top.
It presents from left to right, the 4 time phases of ARS--
Prodrome: when ARS signs and symptoms first appear; A Latent Phase: when most prodromal
symptoms abate; A Manifest Illness Phase: when the patient is the sickest; and finally,
either Recovery or Death. Second, notice the panel on the left, with
5 radiation dose ranges, in units of gray. As I click through the dose ranges in the
left panel from lowest to highest, notice 3 things in the colored rectangle at the top.
As the dose range increases, the time phases develop faster, the clinical effects worsen,
and death, if it occurs, happens earlier. Next look below the gray horizontal rows at
the 4 text columns describing each of the 4 time phases, and the bar graph on the left
illustrating 3 ARS subsyndromes: hematopoietic (H), gastrointestinal (G), and neurovascular
(N). As I click again through the 5 dose ranges,
2 things happen: text in the 4 columns changes and the bar graph changes, reflecting worsening
severity for the ARS subsyndromes This concludes the REMM screencast about the
Time Phases of ARS.
