Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. Governor Steve Beshear recently joined
community leaders to break ground on the long-awaited Mall Road project in Florence. It’s a $13
million investment to reverse deteriorating road conditions in the popular Florence Mall
retail corridor one of the best-known and most visible retail districts in Kentucky.
Mall Road is adjacent to Interstates 71 and 75. The Mall Road corridor already accounts
for more than 3,400 jobs, 115 million dollars in employee wages and millions more in state
and local tax revenue. Improvement of Mall Road has been one of the Governor’s top
transportation priorities. Crews will begin the 1.5-mile project by replacing old pavement
and storm water drainage lines. They also will create a pedestrian-friendly and landscaped
environment with sidewalks, trees, medians and decorative street lights. Phase I of the
project is scheduled for completion this November. Phase II should be completed by November 2011. The
project is being carried out by the city of Florence, with state funding through the Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet. Finally remember to buckle up when you’re on the highway. It
will be especially important during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. That’s because law
enforcement officers across Kentucky will be buckling down on those who aren’t buckled
up. It’s an annual enforcement campaign called “Click It or Ticket.” According
to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts when worn correctly are proven
to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat occupants by 45 percent – and by 60 percent
in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans. For more information visit highwaysafety.ky.gov. This
