In the presence of platinum at 800 degree centigrade ammonia reacts with oxygen to form
nitric oxide, which can be used as the starting substance for the manufacture of nitric acid.
This is an industrial process, the principle of which can be demonstrated in the laboratory.
We required laboratory demonstration of this process is shown here.
The platinum coil is heated till it becomes white hot at about 800*C then ammonia and
oxygen are passed through the combustion tube. Under these condition ammonia combine with
oxygen to form nitric oxide and water paper as nitric oxide and nitrogen mono oxide which
colorless found in the air. It cools down and combines of the oxygen of
the air to form reddish brown fumes of nitrogen dioxide.
This nitrogen dioxide that is formed is used for preparing nitric acid in the presence
of water and oxygen as per the chemically conversion shown here.
