What's up, gamers? This is 16Bit Hero, n' I'm here today to talk about the games that marked my childhood, and maybe so did with yours!
This time we're gonna talk about a fighting game in first person view...
Sorta...
Called Super Punch Out!!
With... two exclamation marks...
Adapted from the arcades in 1994, created by Nintendo!
Yeah! the Elite themselves created it!
And what was their result? Let's find out!
Well the game's story is pretty simple, it's about our main guy, Mac, who wants to become the world's greatest boxer
But then Rayden comes and says:
and then he takes him to an alternate reality with fat fighters, schizophrenic old guys and extravagant combatants
Here you fight all on your own, without the Doc's help!
It's an evil universe!
And you gotta fight your way out!
I think that's how this thing goes...
Ok, we already know that this is a fighting game, but the interesting thing is the fighting mode!
Being the sequel to Mike Tyson's Punch Out! on the Nes, it maintains the same style, but with some changes!
The main character, Little Mac... Yeah, that's how he's called, it doesn't matter what name you put in!
Fights according our perspective, because of that we'll only see his back during the fight!
And almost never we'll be able to see his face, only if you win... or if you suck and lose!
When you fight you use both your hands, but each used in a different way
And each time you hit your enemies, you fill this lower bar, and when it's completed, you can do super punches!
...or Knock Out punches, that deal a lot of damage to the opponent!
And this rapid punches that are consecutive and deal normal damage
and everytime you get hit, the bar decreases...
You gotta beat your opponent three times in less than 3 minutes to win, if you don't make it, you lose, or if you fall 3 times, you lose!
and if you beat him so hard that he doesn't get up until the counter goes to 10, you win by K.O.!
Yeah, boxing basic rules!
Depending on your conditions when you beat your enemy, the referee says something different
If you beat him without falling once, he says this:
If you beat him, but you fell once:
and if you beat him when you're about to lose...
When your opponent falls, you can recharge some of your energy until he stands up
Besides, during the fight if your character's face starts to shine, you can power-up, and his punches will be faster
and your super punches will be even more devastating!
When you hit your enemy so many times, you can get him dizzy, and spin around the ring
and if you punch him in the exact moment, you can beat him instantly!
There are 3 ways to avoid... or block the opponent's attack
First, dodging, you can move to your side, and duck and you can also block with your fists
avoid getting hit in the body and in your face, and in any of these cases you can hit him after dodging and he'll get stunned
letting you attack him afterwards
and the other one it's a little more complicated, but it's way better!
That's counter-attacking your opponent's blows, in the exact moment they'll hit you! but you gotta counter in the same side they attack!
Then you'll hit straight in his face, or body, and he'll be stunned automatically and you can hit him longer!
Also, there are certain enemies that make powerful attacks that deal a lot of damage, or even beat you in one hit!
and for some of them, if you hit them in the exact moment... they'll fall right away!
The game consists in competing in various circuits, where we fight three opponents, plus the champion
There are 4 circuits in total, the minor circuit, the major circuit, the world circuit, and the special circuit!
That you unlock once you beat the first 3 circuits without losing once
At the end of every circuit, they'll show you your times on every fight, and your final score, also pointing your place in the records
as you going throw the circuits you'll face fighters from all over the world, each one with his status, wins and loses
They also make some stupidly unnecessary comments before you start!
For example, Glass Joe- I mean! Gabby Jay, the french guy who lost 99 times and only won once, says:
Well, not this time, old man!
Besides he's so weak he shouldn't be in this circuit, it makes me think that he's Glass Joe's father or grandfather!
In this circuit there's also Bear Hugger... a cheap Zangief rip-off!
Piston Hurricane... this guy... seems more normal among this bunch of people...
Bald Bull that looks like he fell from a cliff and broke his head!
for the Major Circuit there's Bob Charley... a Bob Marley reference?
Yeah, what a big alteration of his name...
There's Dragon Chan... a chinese guy that doesn't understand the meaning of boxing...
This is no kickboxing, man!
By the way, he's a Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan reference, if you didn't get it!
And then there's Masked Muscle, a mexican guy that doesn't pronounce spanish well, which is stupid!
and he also has no manners, 'cause he's spitting you in the face all the time!
Yuck! Discusting!
And... Mr Sandman... this guy... I don't get it!
Maybe that's just his nickname, or maybe his parents hated him so much that they didn't name him like a normal person!
Either way, this guy's weird!
For the World Circuit there's Aran Ryan...
some dude that at first looks normal, but when you realize, the guy's a schizophrenic that molests you when you don't expect it!
Back off, you sick!
Also there's this guy... girl...
this person! Heike Kagero...
that attacks you with his/her... hair...?
Um, that's fine, I take it, nothing out of this world-
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE!
First a cheap clone of an singer and an actor some wrestler that switched to boxing, a stalker and now a human being that attacks his/her hair!
The only thing left is a Mad Clown that may want to kill us!
Oh... well... nevermind!
And Super MachoMan, who's a retarded, that pays more attention to the cameras than the fight!
f*cking ***!
and finally the Special Circuit where you fight Narcis Prince...
a girly nacissist prince... that doesn't like to get hit in the face...
Next!
Hoy Quarlow, some old man that shrinks and fights with a stick...
Ah, this is more normal, Rick Bruiser, an overmuscled guy, addict to steroids, that counters with any punch... yeah, that's cool
and the final boss, his brother, Nick Bruiser... that's some parents' imagination, right?
Well, it turns out that this guy got overwelmed by fame and doesn't even tell you anything before you start!
Oh, yeah? Well, let's see!
Oh...
Ummm... well...
AWESOME!
Each character is really unique and with its own personality, and proper fighting style!
and it may take a while for you to learn all their moveset, but once you do the only thing you'd want to do is improve your record
And that's why there's a Time Attack Mode where you can fight against everyone in the circuits that you'd already completed
as much as you want!
Hey, kids! Guess what? There are 3 different endings!
But, nah, it's no big deal!
It's not like he retires from boxing or the future refuses to change or something!
The ending is pretty much the same, but it all depends on your records
If you lose at least one battle in the special circuit, and... you finish, the opponents' faces will appear and their messages...
and... that's it!
This is the ending: "Oh, well, I beated the game!"
The other ending is, if you finish all the circuits but you lost a battle in any of them, not counting the final circuit!
They'll show the opponets fighting, or something, and then the messages... and there!
This is the ending: "GREAT! I beated the game!"
and finally there's the perfect ending, the one you get when you beat all the enemies without losing once!
PROTIP! If you're gonna lose, retire! you'll start all over, but at least you don't f*ck it up!
And when you finish, it'll be like the last ending, but with a Bonus:
Yes! This is the ending:
I kicked your ***! Who's the champion now, uh!?
Ah... violence inspired by videogames...
Hey, you want some tips for fighting?
Well, I won't give you any!
The music is outrageously amazing! it has a great and catchy rhythm, I really love it! and each opponent has its own theme!
and the sound effects of course are cool! In general, each one has its own voice and stuff
But there are certain characters that share the same voices, but that's ok, no problem with that!
Besides, the punches' S.E.s are pretty satisfactory!
The controls are really unique for this game
Dodge with left and right, and duck with down, left punch with Y, and right punch with B
you do the super punch with A, and the rapid punch with A twice
You block your face with Up, and you body is blocked automatically, no arrows needed!
you do the Uppercut with Up and A, and recover energy tapping the buttons fast!
and there... that's it! now go and beat people up!
The game looks really good! the characters look pretty detailed
and they even had the decency to make our character transparent so we can look at the opponent better!
Each character has a unique expression for any moment
And the funniest faces are the ones they make when they are countered! Look at that!
In general, everything is well made, even the audience looks good!
But nobody pays attention to them...
Would you wanna write your name in japanese to show off to your friends?
you have friends, right?
Well, when you're going to create a new game, hold:
and all the letters will appear in japanese... and... guess what are you going to write, unless you actually learned japanese...
So, just use random letters!
Hey, kids! it's time for the fighting tips from your friend Hero!
Yeah, let's play Doc Louis on this one!
With Bald Bull, my only advice is just hit him when he's doing his Bull Charge, but be careful 'cause he can knock you out!
The timing is really important for this thing!
With Dragon Chan, just dodge and then attack, that's the best choice...
and then duck when jumps to kick you, he'll beat you up!
f*cking karateka!
With Masked Muscle is just dodge and attack, avoid his spit, and then keep punching!
Mr Sandman recovers really fast from dizziness, so don't do any uppercuts!
With Aran Ryan, attack until you can do a super punch, then the *** will try to hug you and then do an uppercut!
But if you punch him when his body is open, you'll stun him again, and repeat until he falls
Mad Clown is a *** son of a b*tch! if you'd played this game you may know already!
my advice is the same, just dodge and punch! but, Oh! where do I go? good point, 'cause that wretch has a lot of moves and goes too fast!
Like Bear Hugger, he'll try to grab your head and then do an uppercut! try ducking in any of those cases
With Super Machoman just dodge those super punches that can knock you out in one hit, so duck...
many times...
and counter-attack!
With Narcis Prince you gotta try hit him in the face, but be careful, 'cause then he goes f*cking apesh*t!
He'll desperately try to hit you, but you just have to keep punching him in the face
With Hoy Quarlow... dodge...
dodge his attack with the stick that they should've taken away before going into the ring!
and avoid his FUA!
and counter... just defend!
with Rick Bruiser, dodge or block and then keep punching... for his super you have to move in the exact moment he falls or else you fall!
and be careful, some times, when he blocks your hits he can lesionate your hand, and you won't be able to attack with that one for a while!
for that, just dodge to the opposite side and then you can counter-attack!
and for Nick Bruiser, the best thing is just dodge and then attack, for his special you just dodge and the duck
But, believe it or not, it's incredibly easy once you learn his attack pattern
hit, hit, pause and you'll see where he's gonna attack, counter, keep attacking, he gets dizzy, super punch, he falls, repeat and... victory!
11 seconds! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you very much!
Ah, and if you wanna hear the game's music for a while, when the Nintendo logo appears, with the second controller press:
and you can listen to all the themes you want!
What else can I say, it's one of the best fighting games on the console, precise controls, amazing battles
and it inmerces you into the game's crazy and irrealistic experience, playing as the true Little Mac
They really did a great job, and I could play this game all the time! And that's because this game's replay value is high for me!
Ah, and here's a little info for ya!
Did you know that the guy who announces the fighters is the same guy that voices Mario in Super Mario 64?
Yep!
It's a-me Gabby Jay!
I have only one problem with this game...
There's no multiplayer! Sadly, 'cause that would've been spectacular!
Just imagine, fighting amazing matches, yourself in the ring, battling tirelessly until the end, that'd be awesome!
Well...
It came out too late!
Oh, and Doc Louis... it's not here!
This game gave me an amazing experience, not only as a fighting game, but as a fight in itself!
a fight to overcome your limits, go always farther, and stand with the symbol of your victory
Showing that you can surpass anyone with enough hard work!
For all this, i'll give this game...
