(updated 4.19.13) Welcome to the Saddleback Library.
My name is Elizabeth and I am the Distance Learning Librarian at Saddleback College.
Today we will look at the Country Watch database. CountryWatch provides critical country-specific
intelligence and data and is one of my favorite databases because I love to travel and it
helps me learn things about the country before I go.
This is the home page. There are a lot of button options on it, but I go straight to
the “Quick Links” and select a country. Iceland is on my bucket list so I am going
to select it for this video.
The page that opens is the Country Review for Iceland. Shown are “Country Details”
like a map and the Iceland flag. “Key Data” is further down the page highlighting
Notable Cities, Average Temperatures and other “Key Data”.
To the left of the page are all the details of the Iceland “Country Review”.
Country Overview has Key Data and PDFs and country maps.
Political Overview covers history, political conditions, human rights and a long list of
items that deal with politics.
The Economic Overview reports on the economy of a country including energy, metals and
agriculture data.
Investment Overview explains about investments with links for taxation and the law.
The Social Overview is one of my favorite sections with the Travel Guide and Cultural
Etiquette sections.
Environmental Overview has specific information about Iceland, the country I looked up, but
also has general information about environmental issues.
I can click through each of these categories looking for information, or I can download
the Country PDF. It has all the information from the “Country Review”.
CountryWatch has other features like Country Wire or Country Maps.
Country Wire provides daily news coverage for all countries and features up-to-date
articles from regional news wire services around the world.
Country maps have Thematic Maps and Political/Physical Maps.
Take some time to explore CountryWatch. It has so much information and there is so much
to learn about countries in the world.
