Wollongong City Council looks after 17 patrolled beaches stretching from Stanwell Park in the north
to Windang in the south. North Beach is our only beach that is patrolled all year round.
Our 16 other beaches are patrolled from the start of the September school holidays
until the end of the April school holidays. Whatever beach you're at, there are a few
simple rules to keep you safe. No flags means there's no swimming. Never enter the water
unless the red and yellow flags are in place to let you know it's safe and the lifeguards
are watching you. All access ways to our beaches have signs with important safety information.
Each beach is different, so make sure you check the signs before you go into the water.
It's also a good idea to talk to the lifeguards before going in the water. They'll be able
to tell you what the local conditions are like and can help you if you need first aid
or other assistance. If you're in the water and you get into trouble, stay calm and raise
your arm over your head to signal for help. Don't swim alone, always swim with a friend,
and make sure your kids are supervised. Remember even when lifeguards are patrolling, conditions
can change very quickly. Always follow instructions from the lifeguards and make sure your next
visit to the beach is a safe one.
