The broadband network is being enhanced
to bring world-class broadband to rural NZers.
The government has signed an agreement with Vodafone and Telecom
which will deliver faster broadband access and a significant expansion
of mobile voice, SMS and data coverage.
But Maori have some concerns.
It's an avenue to connect with the world.
This will benefit our marae and our people.
The Minister of Maori Affairs has set up a Maori working group
to discuss the impacts of this contract.
The working group's brief is still being drafted
which will allow them to communicate with the main group
and allow Maori to be part of this move towards faster broadband.
The government has signed a contract with Vodafone and Telecom
worth nearly $3 million to build new phone towers
and expand the number of schools and homes who can access fast broadband.
Anthony Royal, of the Maori Minister's working group, says
Maori need to be careful of the big companies' competitiveness.
The working group will maintain communication with the government
so that Maori concerns are not left ignored.
