>>Anchor: It’s a race to the finish. Eight states in eight days.
And it all began today at RIT. It is the American Solar Challenge.
Student-run teams built solar-powered vehicles this afternoon and then they took to the road
for a 1600-mile race around the Great Lakes. As you can see here, these aren’t your typical
cars or trucks, these things look like they came right out of a sci-fi movie. And get
this-some of them can reach 50 miles per hour. Organizers of this year’s race say this
is a two-year project for these teams. >>Organizer: Basically this is an educational
competition for engineering students as well as students of all majors to come out do some
hands-on learning, by designing, building, racing a solar powered vehicle across a portion
of this country. >>Anchor: There were 12 cars in the event.
Teams from all over the U.S. are competing as well as British Columbia and Canada.
