This is Brian McInerney, and I’m the Hydrologist with the National Weather Service
located at the Salt Lake City Airport located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This briefing will
look at a winter storm that is forecast to move into Utah sometime Friday. So let’s get
to it.
As of Tuesday, November 6th, a low pressure is currently over the pacific ocean. This weather
system is forecast to move into Utah Friday bringing widespread snowfall to the area.
There will be a significant change in the weather this weekend. Wednesday will be warm
and sunny, with max temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal. Thursday will be
warm and windy. The strongest winds will be across western Utah. Friday through the
weekend will be cold and snowy with max temps 35 degrees colder than midweek. Accumulating snow
will drop down to the valley floors.
Gusty strong winds on Thursday will affect mostly western Utah. These winds are forecast
to gust up to 60 mph, and impact roadways running east to west. High profile vehicles
traveling along SR-21, US-6 and I-70 may have difficulty due to the high winds and blowing
dust. Visibility will be an issue throughout Thursday.
This storm is forecast to move into Utah Friday from the Northwest. Snow will develop
Friday across northern Utah, and continue through Sunday. Northern Utah mountains will
see the highest snow amounts with amounts of 1-3 feet, with southern Utah mountains
receiving around 1-2 feet. Valley locations will also see snow accumulations through this
storm.
Windy conditions to move into Utah Thursday ahead of the storm. Snowfall to follow the
strong winds and bring accumulations statewide. Amounts of 1-2 feet
are expected southern mountains with 1-3 feet in the northern mountains.
