For those people who don't know me my name is Bec Spink.
Some of you might know me because I am actually an
international education ambassador for Evernote
and for once
I am presenting about something different to Evernote but if you do you have any
questions
about Evernote I'm here and around and i'll be here all day
So welcome to teaching the Social Media Generation.
Thanks for coming thanks, thanks for signing up.
Basically today i wanted to share with you some of the ways that i'm trying
to use social media in my classroom
to portray a positive view of
kids under 13 using social media
one of the
quotes that
I have up here is from a student in my class who's in grade 6 this year and I have him
again this year
we had the experience with using twitter last year and he wrote in a blog post
that little people can do big things
and I want to show you that
quote in context
so he wrote that it's not every day that the Prime Minister tweets an eleven year old.
Peter Garrett soon replied and I hope one day I can get someone even bigger to tweet
me.
I believe tweeting is a big part of learning because it teaches us about cyber
safety, how to use social media responsibly
and can also teach us in writing.
I believe my teacher, classroom and I are very important in the social networking world
and we tell the world about our learning and show the world that little people can do big things
and I suppose
I knew I was kind of onto something
but when he wrote that with out any coaching
without me saying anything to him
I said just tell me how you feel
about the prime minister tweeting you about Peter Garrett tweeting you
I just want to know from your perspective. I know how I feel about it you tell me
how you feel
and um... and that was the response i got so I knew then that I was onto something
quite big
that could open up a whole new world
to my students and myself I suppose in the classroom
welcome
so have we all seen some of these Apps
before
most of these sites
except for skype I think I found out the other day that I think
you have to be thirteen or over to use.
So most of these sites require students to be thirteen years of age or over
I did just a quick show of hands with kids in my class
they're ten and eleven some are twelve years old
and i found the every one of these sites were mentioned
they have accounts
and in some cases
their parents don't know
probably don't allow them to have it
and i think
especially my demographic i think a lot of
parents don't understand
how or why it can be dangerous for their children to be using
some of these sites in the classroom
or in their social lives
so
when i did that i found out that they were using these sites
I was a little bit worried because i thought well
you know that's how cyber bullying and you know there's all these issue of safety that come up
and I
basically just wanted to teach my students to be
safe and responsible users of social media
and i thought well what better way is there to do that
then by using it with them authentically
So I
talked to them about it
and they came up with these list of things that
uh... that they use these sites for. Communicating, sharing thoughts and ideas
Learning
Researching, socialising was the biggest one and then I talked to them about
the fact that
they are starting to create their digital footprint
uh...
just because you delete something off the internet
doesn't mean that it can't be found
so to get that across to them or
if they've got something on private doesn't that mean somebody can't
try and hack in and find it and things like that.
So to get them to to think about it
was quite interesting and they were shocked most of them.
So through modelling best practice students will instinctively learn about
about positive ways social media can be used
and i think there are too many negatives
There are so many things in the media all the time
about how bad social media is
and i think that's because yes bad things do happen
but it's because kids don't know any other way how to use it.
so i think you know i've
if they're using it in their lives then I want to use it in the classroom to try and show
them positive
and exciting ways we can use it for our learning.
I going to show you just one way I'm trying to engage this social media
generation into my classroom and that's by using twitter.
Does everybody know what twitter is?
is everybody here using twitter? Can you please and put your hands up if you're on twitter
If you're not
I would suggest getting on there because
it's really hard
for you to teach the students about it if you're not using it already yourself.
So basically the beauty of twitter
is that it's in real-time
you can connect with educators all over the world
and participate in real world conversations
and specified chats using hash tags (#)
twitter gives people from all over the world the ability to connect in a matter of seconds
and it connects users to the latest stories news and information from
whoever they are following.
Is anybody using twitter with their kids yet?
a little bit.
Beautiful, can I ask what you use it for?
A few weeks ago I sent out
a tweet
and i asked why teachers are using twitter
and I got responses
really quickly and i just want to show a sample
and just while I read the tweets have a think about the key words
that keep coming up
So we have Bec who is sitting down in the front row
She uses twitter to connect ideas with passionate educators, to get inspiration and
to share.
We've got Casey who tweets to collaborate, share and learn.
We've got Jenny who tweets
to share and learn and most importantly to think globally and connect
she thinks twitter gives her and edge as an educator
We've got Margaret there who says she uses twitter to keep up with the latest trends and to connect with like minded teachers
A newbie to twitter, this lady had only just started
She had already found so many possibilities and
so much inspiration out there
Megan had said she enjoyed the social interaction and learning over boarders
Luke, he tweets to connect, learn, share and be inspired
and Jan
says learn, share and connect with other learners, educators and teachers and stay in touch with those who are
not in my neighbourhood.
So did anybody notice any
keywords there?
Learn and share yeah, is there any other reasons you could add?
So the keywords I got were to share, to learn, to connect
and the special one
to be inspired.
So my question is then
if we're doing all of this for us, for ourselves
if i'm on twitter to learn, share, connect, be inspired
with teachers from all over the world then why aren't I doing it with my kids?
and that was basically what made me start using twitter
in the classroom.
I want to give my students the same opportunities
to experience
the connection, the learning,
the inspiration that they can get from using twitter in the classroom.
okay
ideas
does anybody have any ideas of how we could use twitter in the classroom?
You all use twitter, well most of you use twitter
as teachers, educators
Judith
ask questions, great
fantastic about
yep, fantastic and experts that I have connected with, with my students is obviously
the Prime Minister that was a big one, a one off I think
don't know if that will ever happen again
and um...
we also did a unit of work based on
Australia's Asia-pacific relations in got in touch with the asylum seeker resource
center
through twitter
which is great
kids organised a
grocery drive
then the resource centre came out to collect the groceries
and that all happened through twitter which was great
okay so here are some of mine here.
gathering data in maths
uh... connecting collaborating and communicating
to share links. We often write blog posts and I'll share links to those blog posts on twitter
and then I retweet it through
my own
account to try and hopefully attract
a few more responses of people reading our stuff
I often tweet our learning intention
at the start of a lesson and then anything that we do
through the lesson.
Student reflections
Work samples, so I'll take a picture of
students work and pop it straight up
and asked questions
which was mentioned, our wonderings
and to document and share our learning
I'll put this
presentation of my blog
so you can go back and see it.
I'm just going to show you some screenshots of how I have used it
this is my class
@asps456
I've kept the same twitter account from last year
I do have a new grade
this year there are some of the same students in there
from last year
If you would like to get on and follow us and have a look and see what we've been doing we had a very
exciting day yesterday at a writing festival so you can
see what we learnt
I really try and embed tweeting in my sharing and reflections at the end
of the lesson
I think it makes
my students a little bit more accountable for what they they do and
say in their reflection, if you say that the whole world is going to see it
then they seem to put a little bit more effort into their thoughts which has
been quite good
uh... reminders. So term one I've got homework that we do over a few weeks
so they get um...
quite a while to finish it and then
put the due date up.
The good thing about that is that i have a twitter widget on my class blog
So the kids can... I''ll show you
So the kids actually don't have to go onto twitter
If they just go onto the blog they can see there are our most recent tweets there
which has been quite good.
They can also check
through
by going on to the twitter profile
obviously they can't do that from their netbooks or iPads at school though.
My
class blog
is
acps56b2013.blogspot.com.au/
if you find us on twitter it's linked to there
Crowd: Do all of the students have their own account?
No, because they're not thirteen, that's not allowed.
So I'll talk a little bit about how i managed that
I'll show some ways but no they don't use it themselves they'll use it on my phone or my iPad or my computer
but they don't actually have their own.
For example yesterday they were on an excursion
at
a writing festival, and I have
very trustworth kids it would depend on
you know you and your students but
I passed my phone around
they were sitting there and they were feeding through what the authors were telling them and what they noticed and things like that things that.
Obviously I supervised and sat next to them and
before they press send they have to show me.
so it's not like I let them run away with my phone
and another thing we do is share achievements and classroom happenings
It gets them excited if they think that
there is a whole world of people out there listening to what they're doing and
what they're learning.
Here we have some examples of tweeting with real-world people.
Making connections
to enhance student motivation
some of the tweets that
my students start off having conversations with
actually have a tendency to
become extended conversations which are then taken over to our blog.
so sometimes we'll tweet a link to something and we'll get some comments
and there's a few things going back and forth but then
twitter is only one hundred and forty characters or less
so the conversation generally gets extended through the blog where they can
have a bigger more in-depth conversation
the best thing about
you know, because some of these people are not just teachers
for the fact that
people that aren't teachers and aren't students that are interested in their learning
it results in increased enthusiasm and motivation they
love it
they get so excited when they get a tweet and generally
I've put the students initials in
and so when somebody writes back and it has
their initials in it
they know its
suited to them and
the looks on their faces is just.. beautiful.
Ok, here I have some examples of embedding learning intentions into twitter
as well as lesson activities
I began over hear with tweeting our learning intention what we're going to do for maths
so we're learning to explain the chance of an event occurring
and then we went out the front of the school and we collected data on the
cars around the school and wrote chance statements so that was the whole lesson
then we came back into the classroom
they create just like an introduction to chance
and they wrote their sentences.
I've also introduced them to hash tags (#)
so they know #vicPLN because they know it's all of the teachers and students
in Victoria
they know #mathchat, they know #edchat
We have them written on our tweet wall as well, which I'll show you.
Another thing I use the Smart Notebook App
to mirror some lessons
and this is a lesson that I downloaded off Smart exchange I think
and
We were doing persuasive writing
obviously so we were persuading our readers to take a holiday using rhetorical questions
and captions
and we took a picture of what we had done in our whole class focus
here's some more examples of just putting it
in the lesson.
I make sure that when I'm planning
I write actually
take a a picture and put it on twitter
tweet learning intention or in reflection
if students answer these reflection stems
tweet student responses
I always make sure I put it in because I find if I don't put it in my planning I
sometimes I forget
If I put it in my planning I'm very very explicit to how
I want I want to use twitter
during the lesson and what I'm going to do and say with it
it makes me more accountable to using it.
I also grade share
so it helps the other teacher as well.
Their rhetorical questions using
advertising. They wrote a few. They wrote them up on the
iPad
I took a picture of it, shared it.
Think of a different caption that sums up the main idea, so that was
a reading lesson
and then after that we actually tweeted
their captions instead of 'don't kill our wildlife' and they had
a whole list of them.
I suppose instead of making an anchor chart in the classroom or a poster to display
you could do both
or sometimes
if we just write them straight into twitter I'll print them out and
display them up
so they're still documenting it.
I love this slide because it's an example of making global connection so this is
a class and a teacher in New Zealand
and she actually tweeted us
in a Maori language.
It was quite funny
I had to go and figure out what it meant before I actually showed the kids
because I
didn't know what i was and I didn't want it to be something inappropriate or something.
So luckily I had some New Zealand friends so I got onto Facebook
and I found out what it meant so then I could go to school on Monday
and say, "Hey guys, guess what? We've go a tweet and they're talking to us in Maori"
So then we got on
We actually asked what it meant even though I already knew, the kids didn't know that.
It was quite good. I even tried to go onto to Google Translator but they don't
have Maori, don't try.
It was quite good.
This one is from a teacher I think in London
or over there somewhere
I can't remember i'd have to go and check.
So he was talking about money talking and he said the new
five dollar note will feature Winston Churchill on the back. Who would you put on the back
and this created
lots of arguments.
Lots of heated discussion in the classroom but then they came back with
Julia Gillard because she was the first female prime minister
if we had to change it.
I love the fact that when were using twitter with the whole class
than they have to work as a team.
They can
disagree and they can have these heated discussions but in the end
they have to come up with a
tweet that
represents what they want to say as a whole class.
They are coming up with the common agreement before we press send.
If somebody doesn't agree then we don't do it from the whole class. We'll put a students
name next to it
or initials.
ferrying leases probly them
be discretion i get when i talk about
using to do we keep them and say well how do you do it
uh...
had i get eighteen
and i think one of the biggest bingo is to make it a habit
if you need to have anything to everyday mickey dot finnegan exciting
think with that
that's how i i started i thought it had presently
i would do you think your name
they didn't know that has tagged
and it was just
black adhoc
but now i've
put it into my planning in made it far much more explicit
that had has become
uh... a habit
my body
used to treat every day
i am
sometime dot prbly being a little bit bad about lately because i've just gone
from taking
freehoff date in the class into two days
from nineteen there is not to say
when i am email however i do try and and do as much as i can
uh...
i wanna shape from that might be able
entree semi camp was of yesterday
uh...
acts
the excusing could buy the third fantastic
earned thirty dot it down
so there is a heap of different authors that the sample of the system are
and found it
it was great so i have i went through and sets for them
that's their names in particular deciding to go if i could see if i could
find one three dot
and on the cubans
family siding
and so we decided
putting things break up and then
they started doing that i a m
and then we actually recorded um... wanted all of his rating and we put that
up there
we were able to take pictures
so then when we came back to the costing
heaps of stuff they did talk about think you can actually have t unit
i think it would have been a habit
to remember
was all day we had kind of a synopsis of that day
and then we got through all of the following a three to david boren burning
and then now it's cleaning up
so um...
how do you do you rights
he perforated take that book that yet
there you go photos on the reef eighteen tank
you know she has
um... e written back to nearly every three correct on her colleague to going
uh... and do some writing that he done monday because
unite all of the stuff there may be creating a leak this ruling fighting a
story
then she's put on that
uh... christian factoid def
they would be putting this on the roof of the crater then liberian and stuff
like that
i can just and i do want to keep the going arrival monday which be really
good
again sorry to train every day and i've talked about embedding straight
throughout lessened assessment and reflection
for having in ukraine because it makes more accountable
uh... effects homicide to rate in response to reply to the whole process
probly the hottest thing i can give
finding the time skirts are usually try and do it
just after i've knocked the role in the morning
we think there's been any treat
um...
from the day before
on
and eight you know looking at ap class balkan conflict that
anytime
i think he read it
somebody's running back to the great model that excitement
fail what a great all have babies at that and you know hazel has created a
back will have to sweeten it will have to extend that conversation
because the more excited you off obviously gaza rotated through more
excited they're going to be
some management papa things that i have tried to implement is a traitor today
the basically one student
would be in charge of talking next week dot
just a management team i've done it for a coupla days that
i find that mike's we've always a little bit more powerful socially tubes chicken
that we have these
feed dogs
that need to get shot
so they're kind of like an extra walt
uh... and
my building it quietly that i had the
glass window
the great ritual
as predicted dark
if we don't start you can see inside the classroom
the doors and shot
so i bought some talked encino the ones that you know you know like a cafe
through brought polygon
and uh... that use that's right it's great that faith
if i'm working with a group or something and and icon get to me to write a tweet
they brought it up on the boy emma but at least attached tagamet
uh... and
they put their any shows
and then later on nightline up but the fifty seconds i'll just come past
quickly competent
or if i'm really be the i take peachtree road
and just repeat up
and you've put it putting the hash tag
uh... another one like this is an example of a scene she had
free created a front cover of on
daria dolan he'd program i think
she was so excited supporting look me thing
he's lucky charm
hyphen oxo
returning to think it's going to be there
i said what the piece of paper
who sat nine i'm gonna put gary's fishermen stepped on the wall
on the table where it's great for homework i may be
and create a hash tag and then i had to go ever intake picture of that
and then traded ferry basis i thought id then that's what she wanted to be
here and that we have an inspiration now out treats women
prime minister income cake activity
the decline of that
and a ticket
then medicare world probly familiar with that tenants if i did the acceptable a
attach munich eight on the instead
laxmikant
and take it should be taught explicitly to students lending acceptable behavior
is an integral component of since becoming informed in response to a
ticket did you tell us be different
ferry dying to ad hoc
may show ye
explicitly take check connected to your school values
few classroom rules
the basically anything that's not
uh... unity fifteen e-mail offering they accepted it on three dollar on the
internet
uh... i'll wait approved three before letting
and things and uniting talk about it
extra which piece of writing a man maybe a hundred forty characters but we want
creek filling their creek
grammar and punctuation
and there has to be appropriate
technician
so i'm very lucky that i have a very supportive principle
and i went in and said i've created a class through their account
eleni stream are costing
people use it it'll be run by maybe today not detain
and he said okay
then i know that's not taking many school
uh... but i'm very lucky say
if you are now part
these on my blog anything contact antitank area and take it to people and
showed him and hopefully the video will be online
as though he mohair
and info on trenton school community
day
five day now tonight at the side of the year injected
in a coming from a country i've made a big deal about it
uh...
to incur read you know you can't come in for a lifting it might be
uh... they what they called doing in the cost they would cost look
reply just wait
uh...
you know these they have a reply paper yet because
saturday and
on that week machine so i knew aren't very very bailey tweak
from the cockpit catholic if he did it
um... if i do i put from me think or something at the end so they know it's
the taken up distance
uh...
week for applying night because lack of by i don't wanna same reason
so i'm not going from mine
teacher can fake thanks for applying thank you can't four five six two three
will be in contact monday when the ticket back at school or something like
that just that i know i'm not ignoring them
obvious on vaca lot
quality and quantity is only a hundred and forty characters then make it cannot
it's a really good feel for students to learn how to summarize what they're
trying to say in such a short amount of work
and
don't copy create facts right to take my kids about how we recreate and modify
and mention people in a trait
for their own lacked legal five or ten minutes with it
many lessons i suppose on
that what you would integrate in the classroom
and you know provide scenes for the best case scenario means
showing them how to use pretty responsibly and effectively
say it's more about celebrities
there's more to the world than that
if there are a lot of liberties entry about how can leave the prowling
getting your classify and put up
thanking you have today eve training camp
cheesy euthanize make it as short as possible because you and have a hundred
and forty characters
your reasoning county denies characters
uh...
when writing your profile identified at your clock sir
uh... weighing a prom in may be why you wanted
used to it so i should really have a think about that
maybe thinking that perfectly requirement for
using three oh three
quibble connection for further that faith
if other on

an interesting one thing your

then that would restrict the connections that we could make lately
uh...
but all of my students have big we have that

uh... at this time the evite their enrollment that united they get

and search for classes to follow art design
make it look like
interesting and it looks like i put it peter
